1) Tell us a bit about yourself and your record collection.

Oh, well, hi! I do a lot of things, but for the most part I write about music (e.g. for JUICE magazine, redbull.com/music and many more), I work for Hamburg's Spektrum Festival (https://www.facebook.com/spektrum.ms) and I play music. Sometimes I even just listen to it. I started getting into rap music around 1990 or 1991, which in turn made me discover funk, soul and jazz records as soon as I figured out how this sampling thing worked. After that, it kind of gets blurry – electronic music from house to deep, dark bass stuff, African, Turkish and Persian music, but also rock, metal and whatever. A certain groove is the one thing connecting all of it.

I wouldn't consider myself a serious collector, but I still might have some four thousand records in my music room, across all formats and genres. For the past ten years, I've been trying to keep my collection at a more or less constant size, so I keep sorting out stuff while still adding new records. In the long run I like the idea of only keeping a core collection of a few (a few hundred maybe) really, really important records, because owning too many things always feels annoying to me. But that might not happen soon.

2) 45/7 is all about celebrating the 7". Can you tell us a bit about what you love about the format.

To be honest, it's more of a love/hate relationship, and I firmly believe that music is way more important than the format you use to play it. If it's a good record and you play a shitty MP3 of it on a shitty cell phone speaker, it's still a good record. So there's that.

When I deejay, I use digital solutions more often than not, because they allow me to do things and play songs I just couldn't using vinyl. But every once in a while, it feels really relaxing to play a proper vinyl set, because I'm more connected to the music when it really is under my fingertips, plus, it's how I learned to be a DJ in the first place, of course. With records, I don't waste any time thinking about technical stuff beyond »if the needle skips, I'm fucked«. (And nothing skips more easily than a 45 when scratching.)

So I'm not part of the »45s only« movement. But it's a fun, minimalist format, it's highly portable, and a lot of music I like to play is available on 7 inch vinyl – sometimes exclusively. Maybe it's like cycling – there are many more comfortable and flashy ways to get from A to B, but often it's all you need to have a great time.


3) One hour of vinyl goodness... can you talk us through your selection for your 45/7 mix?

That sort of just happened when I started playing with some records I had recently bought and played. And it illustrates the importance of break beats – to me, and to hip-hop in general, because many records on here are really heavy on drums. You'll hear some classics, a lot of remixes and bootleg edits which are pretty self-explanatory, a nice vocoder boogie version of Steely Dan's »Peg«, and I sprinkled in some random rap goodness like a 1991 B-side by Die Fantastischen Vier (one of the most successful bands in Germany) or the obscure Austrian Herwig & Alois 45 (an early incarnation of Kamp & Whizz Vienna).

Yoshidog - Jazz Digga: Volume 1

I met Yoshidog about a year ago at which time I noticed he was one of Brisbane's nicest on the wheels of steel. During the time we've been mates he's developed a strong interest in learning more about music, diggin' and in particular jazz stylings of the 70's.

As a frequent visitor to the Bulletproof Crates, I noticed something different about Yoshidog, he freakishly reminded me of how my respected peers and I approached diggin' back in the day — hunting down "used" samples from hip-hop's past — learning about artists in a sequential order of what records came his way, all the while ignoring trends and influence in 2018's world of vinyls and reissues, where genres and hashtags influence the status quo and sheep (no pun intended). Using his own ears and partaking in a dedicated study and hunt for his wants list was his modus operandi, and an individually over his peers who seemingly spend more time on discogs and instagram for "leads" over listening and learning alone with their own two (ears, not balls).

In December of 2017, Yoshidog and I headed out to Japan on a mission to dig in the crates with his hand written wants list and a small stack of yen. This here is his result of that trip and all the time and work in the crates he's put in thus far. 100% hard hittin' steamy funky soulful jazz burners live and direct on 2 decks and a mixer, recorded somewhere on the Southside of Brisbane, Australia on a Saturday Afternoon.

I'm proud to cosign this first volume of "Jazz Digga" - It's a 66 minute pill of chill with a steady dose of funk and soul. Hit play and enjoy the journey!

Flashback. At the turn of the first decade of 2000, a stray cat from the Parisian suburbs named Fritz came to skin the bling bling of the time by imposing his claw on the scene of international indie rap. With Slow Down and On & On a series of EPs on 7’ in an ultra-efficient jazzy manifesto, the beatmaker earned his stripes with class and insolence. Since then, the path of the Paris’ tom cat is built over his experiences and meetings, including the album Beats Per Minute in duet with rapper Audessey (Soundsci), released on the prestigious American label Slice Of Spice (Lord Finesse, Marco Polo...). One will not need more to register the legend of ACCF on the pantheon of the most talented French producers of international underground Hip Hop and confirm the adage that cats control the world.
In 2015, Fritz decides to condense his night wanderings in his first album Tribulations & Life of, an album anchored in his time, made in the moment and with instinct. A few years later, crowned by a signature at the legendary German label HHV, Fritz continues to drag his feline silhouette to the four corners of the globe. So that listening to his latest album Vertical Iris gives the pleasant sensation of moving forward Stealthily in known terrain as on a new land to clear.
Addictive samples, raw and rough tones nuanced from the blue notes of the 90’s rap punctuated by cinematographic atmospheres, the same flawless recipe applied since its beginnings, is here reinforced by a slew of hand-picked featurings such as Black Josh (UK), Audessey (US), Sach (The Nonce / US), Glad2mecha (US), LayFullStop (UK) ...

Avec "Slow Down" et "On & On" une série de EP 45 tours inscrits dans un manifeste jazzy ultra efficace, le beatmaker gagnait ses galons avec classe et insolence. Depuis, le chemin du matou parisien se construit au fil de ses expériences et rencontres, notamment l’album Beats Per Minute en duo avec le rapper Audessey (Soundsci), sorti sur le prestigieux label américain Slice Of Spice (Lord Finesse, Marco Polo...). Il n’en faudra pas plus pour inscrire la légende de A Cat Called Fritz au panthéon des producteurs français les plus talentueux du Hip Hop underground international et confirmer l’adage qui veut que les chats contrôlent le monde.
En 2015 Fritz décide de condenser ses errances nocturnes dans son premier album Tribulations & Life of, un album ancré dans son époque, fait dans l’instant et avec instinct. Quelques années plus tard, auréolé d’une signature chez le mythique label allemand HHV, Fritz continue de trainer sa silhouette féline aux quatre coins du globe. Si bien que l’écoute de son dernier opus Vertical Iris donne l’agréable sensation d’avancer à pas de velours en terrain connu comme sur une terre nouvelle à défricher.
