Jarren Benton was born in Decatur, GA (east side of Atlanta). He grew up without a father figure in the home and hip-hop quickly became like a second parent. He first discovered his love for hip hop at age 6.

While other kids were pissing their beds, Jarren would stay up past midnight to record “The Fresh Party,” a local Atlanta hip-hop radio show. Inspired by the show, Jarren began to write his own rhymes, and by age 10 he was a premature “beast” on the mic. Jarren became obsessed with rapping, and music, and dropped out of high school to pursue a musical career.

After turning his focus to hip-hop, Jarrren spent all of his time on his craft. Soon he began producing tracks, and writing, for other artists throughout Atlanta. He also worked on developing one of the best live shows in Atlanta, something he felt many artists lacked.

His live shows have caught the attention of many local media, promoters and industry heads. He has performed at the BMI Showcase, Southeastern Music Conference, Atlantis Music Festival, A3C Hip-Hop Festival and has opened for artists from KRS-ONE to Lil’ Wayne. Jarren has also collaborated on records with an wide array of amazing artists like: 2 Chains, Erick Sermon, Freeway, Bubba Sparxxx, Gangsta Boo, Kid Daytona, Verse Simmons, Kaleena, Rittz, Jon Connor, Laws, Aleon Craft and many more.

Jarren possess sick humorous punch lines and heart felt tales of personal struggle. “I want to give people quality down south music, something the south has been missing since Outkast,” says Jarren. He gives you a balance of hardcore, playful and conscious rap music that seldom exists in today’s hip-hop.

Being raised in a small suburb that most people haven’t heard of never stopped Ultralight from pushing the musical envelope. To the criticism and dismay of his peers, his passion veered from gaming to trying his hand in Hip-Hop. An impressive fourth place placement in a Funk Flex Indie Artist Leaderboard for musicians with potential, and a pandemic following afterward catapulted what was this fun hobby into a serious passion. 

Riding the late 2010s wave of mixtapes and remixes of popular songs, heavily influenced at the time by the likes of artists such as Logic, Kendrick Lamar, Eminem, and Wiz Khalifa, his surprisingly advanced vocal delivery coupled with promising lyrical potential was enough to garner at least some underground momentum in 2019 and 2020. 

What sound comes next would be hard to answer for an artist with the versatility of Ultralight, even with just his catalog over the last couple of years; everything from the lush, dreamy, sensual ‘happy never after’, the trap-style mixtape ‘Before We Hit The Road’ even to the soulful genre-blended ‘heartbreak boulevard’, it’s enough to keep most listeners guessing. 

Regardless, the musical growth is on display for anyone who wants to discover it, and potentially anyone looking for Maryland’s next big Hip-Hop persona.
