French II exploded onto the dance scene two years ago with the hard-hitting EP’s ‘Hytune’ and ‘Control’. Both releases drew appraisal from some of the industry’s leading names, including Call Super, Carista, Martyn, Madam X and Or:La. Now the Dutch producer makes his return to Intercept Records with ‘CD Is Dead’, a four-track record that sees the artist present a new sound. Inspired by electronic sounds synonymous with the UK, the EP delves into the worlds of breakbeat, two-step, with key inspiration coming from garage as well.
Now based in Berlin, ‘CD Is Dead’ further cements French II’s reputation as a true innovator and instigator of bass-heavy and moody club sounds. However, whilst the EP is undoubtedly dark and cold in its design, the artist placed a key focus on groove, and how his music impacts the dancefloor.
The end product is addictive, and the title track showcases just how hypnotising it can be. With its wobbly bassline and in-your face grime-esque vocals, its drive is unwavering and perfectly sets the scene for the rest of the project.
'Frequency' turns that on its head, and French II dips into previously unknown territory with one of his first 4/4 tracks. The artist once again places vocals at the forefront, but this time it’s driven by 140bpm
beat, accompanied by a driving bassline groove and zappy synths which make for an electrifying dance floor weapon. The artist completes the EP’s journey with the emotionally charged ‘Still Here’,
which delivers an array of atmospheric beats and enchanting vocals that gently bring the EP to a close.
‘CD Is Dead’ sets the scene for what French II has to come throughout the next 12 months. It’s a release that’s already garnered support across radio and live streaming services, featuring on the likes of HÖR, Boiler room, Rinse fm and NTS radio. The artist has proved to be a hit among the music industry and now he’s delivered four exciting tracks that look set to break through to a wider audience.

Opening with leashless, a techy, emotional, ambient brain tickler, opening a different world of sound design; is it the start or the end? hypersass is an experimental techno/gqom hybrid designed for pure upfront chaos, with the dancefloor being only considered for brief moments before returning to fractured rhythms. Finally, operating different, a metallic tonal ambient track which closes the door to this strange world.
