About

Joomanji was formed in 2010 by Jonah Christian, Amir Oosman, and Robert Finucane. The multi-faceted instrumentalists met at the University of California Santa Cruz whilst studying Jazz and Electronic Music. Their first release, MANJ, gained attention from FACT Magazine, Earmilk, BamaLoveSoul, Pigeons &amp; Planes, as well as many other prominent musical blogs. The project also hit #1 on Bandcamp.com's Neo-Soul &amp; Nu-Jazz charts, respectively, &amp; was placed on Reddit’s official best of 2013 “ListentoThis” list. 

Joomanji has had the pleasure of collaborating with artists such as Devin the Dude, Carlitta Durand, Chris Young the Rapper (VIBE) and many more. The group has relocated to Los Angeles and currently features Lindsay Olsen, Austin Antoine and Joseph Salcedo. Productions consist of live recordings mixed intermittently with vinyl chops. The resulting music is a fusion of crisp instrumentals with that vintage sound that us hip hop heads all love.

I've been playing electric guitar, and messed with drums a little and recording raw since 2009. My earliest work is but a mere shadow compared to nowadays, yet some of the tracks from a few years ago I remastered seems to get more attention and likes which was like a ' noisecore deathcore' for lack of a better term. 

"Kevan Smedt is an up and coming guitarist who swings, has a melodic sensibility and is in the moment as an improviser. He's working hard to establish own voice as a player and composer. I enjoy playing with Kevan and I look forward to following Kevan's career and having many more musical conversations with him". -John Stowell

Kevan is a South Bay guitarist, who identifies with guitarists like Jim Hall, Wes Montgomery, Kurt Rosenwinkel, and other musicians like Brad Mehldau, John Coltrane, and Miles Davis. He plays in a wide variety of ensembles, but generally prefers trio settings with upright bass and drums or organ and drums.
