The Landing - Chapter 1 - Backstory

We are thrilled to announce the debut single and first solo release to come from South London’s Lou E, aka 18 year old Louis Milburn. ‘What Do You Do It For?’ / ‘Next Time’ was recorded and mixed in Milburn’s bedroom and a friend’s garden shed in the Autumn of 2015, amidst Louis’ hectic touring schedule playing guitar and keys for Oscar across the globe. The single will be released on 7” vinyl and digitally on 26th February 2016. 

Despite his youth, Milburn is currently sitting on around three albums worth of unreleased material and this prolificity has an almost cult-like feel to it. Pairing the song writing styles and lyricism of the likes of Elliot Smith and Lou Reed with intricate contemporary guitar work similar to Unknown Mortal Orchestra, Lou E’s work is intensely personal whilst retaining a refined and sincere feeling. In his own words, “Lou E is the chance for me to discuss issues, problems and worries that I’m far too British to talk about with everybody and nobody at the same time”.

This concern for a progressive dialogue is found in lead track ‘What Do You Do It For?’, which deals with faux-spirituality and it’s rise as a trend, the snide line of “go find yourself some more” a shot at those who return from foreign cultures with only a set of clichéd appropriations and a pair of harem pants to show for their travels. Turning on his own anxieties for the single’s B-side, ‘Next Time’, Milburn mourns a relationship that ended badly due to a lack of communication and honesty as he sings ‘Say next time for sure / When your heart is out the door’ as drums crash behind him. 

‘What Do You Do It For?’ / ‘Next Time’ is released 26th February on 7” vinyl and digitally via Beech Coma. The single is the second instalment of the label’s bi-monthly subscription series, part-funded by Arts Council England, with the first cut coming late last year from Bruising.

This album encompasses everything the band represents in a single piece of heavy vinyl – from explosive, guitar-solo driven peaks through motoric krautrock grooves to peaceful and atmospheric soundscapes. Like its predecessor the album was recorded during a single intense week in a small house in the Danish countryside, masterfully engineered and produced by Jonas Munk (Causa Sui), capturing the band in the midst of their creative prime.
