Words from Headphone Commute - 

I often think about childhood experiences. Don't you? Remember those magical moments of discovery of how something in this universe truly works or the slow disintegration of fiction into reality or the self-guided journey into a fantasy, knowing full well that it's really imaginary and yet completely giving in, and letting it absorb you into other worlds? For me, there were adventures into outer space, of alien planets and improbable lands, of other beings just like us, and yet completely different in every way. It's no wonder that many of my fantastical voyages were accompanied by music, made, of course, by instruments unknown. This "space music" is what continues to attract me to some aspects of the cinematic, electronic, and experimental sounds of today. It's no wonder I still attempt to recreate each voyage with the lush pads of my synths. For British composer and musician Angus MacRae, this reflection on childhood imagination comes in a form of his new album, Vivarium. Across twelve pieces, each representing a specific memory, MacRae uses the immediate presence of acoustic instrumentation (piano, strings, woodwinds, and even voice) to capture the emotional experience of the unreal worlds. Today I am premiering a track from the album titled "Flame" which is due out as a single on September 1st. This is a gorgeous and dynamic piece, pairing a gently wavering piano melody in a whirlwind of a rising emotional gust. Listening to this piece you can't help but get lifted into a torrent of a sentimental storm and get carried away into those other worlds. "Written against the backdrop of a changing world, this need to escape inside the vivarium, to recapture the magic and mystery within, and to ultimately learn the limits of the glass - seemed to me more important than ever."

‘Entanglement’, the debut album by Michael Price fulfils his long-term desire to explore new musical territories, featuring Michael on the piano, with the addition of cello, soprano voice, string orchestra, modular synth, tape effects and electronics.

Throughout the record you will hear street sounds from 'Budapest' captured and processed on Michael’s mobile phone, as well as chamber music recorded direct to tape with vintage microphones in single takes. Album track ‘The Attachment’ was partly recorded onto a 1940s magnetic disc recorder, which immediately connected the piece back to a pre-digital musical age.

The cello and soprano vocal parts throughout the album were written specifically and directly for cellist Peter Gregson and vocalist Ashley Knight, whose expressive voice features on tracks ‘Maitri‘ and ‘The Uncertainly Principle‘. The lyrics for both songs are Japanese poetry sung in English, dealing with age, loss and the inevitable fading of beauty.

‘Entanglement’ was written over a period of two years on paper and by hand with Michael exploring oldest and newest technology at Abbey Road Studios and Snap Studios in London, before most of the recording and mixing took place at Vox-Ton in Berlin.

“I wanted to make an album that sounded like a dark, Berlin record store discovery from the 30s. Something that had timeless emotive power, and pre-digital rawness. Something that I hope would make a deeper connection in superficially networked times. I think there is a duty for artists to be honest, and vulnerable. Because then there is a possibility of real connection. Entanglement is both honest and vulnerable and to go through the two year process of writing, refining and recording an album has been more intense and more beautiful than I could have possibly imagined.

I wanted to write a tribute of some kind since Ozzys passing and this is it. Black Sabbath have been a deeply important part of my life, giving it a sense of meaning in a world I rarely fit into. It felt incredibly inspiring that four men from working class backgrounds could achieve heights never seen before, all the while being sneered at by the establishment, precisely because they were from where they were from.
In my life at different points I have revered each member of Black Sabbath in turn for periods of time. At first it was Toni, he is the main inspiration for me playing guitar, then I became the "well actually" guy and became obsessed with a two man rhythm section that I still believe is the best ever, and lastly, Ozzy, it took me a good while to truly appreciate the mercurial genius that is Ozzy Osbourne; no one like him before or since. I was not sad when he passed, I felt over joyed he had the chance to play that last show, and feel how much he meant to everyone.
Anytime I play I feel I owe a debt of gratitude to those four men from Aston, All my riffs, all my lead, its just a love letter to the best band ever, Black Sabbath.
