The Sound Propositions podcast has a unique format. Rather than two people chatting in front of the mic, each episode is an audio-documentary, blending music, field recordings, and sound design with the voice of each  subject. Sound Propositions features conversations with artists exploring their creative practices and individual aesthetics, conceived of as a counter-narrative to a dominant trend in music journalism which fetishizes equipment and new technologies. This series tries to take the emphasis away from the ‘what’ and shine light on the ‘how’ and ‘why.’

This episode features a wide-ranging conversation with Montreal’s Roger Tellier-Craig, known for his work with Fly Pan Am, Godspeed, Le Révélateur and others. In 2019, Fly Pan Am released C'est ça, their first record in 15 years, but their 2020 tour plans were derailed by the COVID-19 pandemic. Tellier-Craig discusses his fascination with music as a studio art, the unexpected creative opportunities presented by quarantine, and the hyperreality of our present in which our fragile sense of reality seems poised to collapse at any moment.

Happy Solstice! The Summer Solstice is the day with the longest period of daylight, and has come to mark the beginning of summer. So it seemed fitting to share this solarpunk inspired mix from @JordanChristoff. Back in 2015, Jordan and Patrick Dique (together known as PJS) put together Harvest, a unique installment in our Lost Children mix series. That may have been their earliest release, actually, but Jordan has been prolific in the years since, working with many of our favorite labels: Shimmering Moods, Muzan Editions, Constellation Tatsu, Phinery, Leaving, Past Inside the Present.  In addition to his work with PJS and as a solo artist, he is also part of Anarchist Mountains with his brother, Stefan Christoff.  [I was very lucky to join them for La terre et la force, released earlier this year.] And so I'm very glad to share post global solarpunk. This mix feels like a warm day basking in the sun, gentle and soothing vibes for a peaceful beginning of the summer.

This mix was selected by Gabe Bogart, old friend and colleague from the site before this one, occasional contributor to ACL. Back in 2013, I asked him for some hip hop producer recommendations, and we put together these beat-centric mixes. We had talked about doing some more mixes in this way (his selection with me doing the mixing) but it wasn't until the pandemic that Gabe sent me over a batch of tracks he’d been enjoying, which I mixed during a particularly cold winter night early in 2021. I sat on that session for a long time, went back and thought I’d mix it afresh but found I enjoyed it as is. (Joseph Sannicandro)

be_ca_di presents Musicians defend Ukraine [mix]

AGF is a powerful poemproducer. She first described herself in these terms on a track of that title from Westernization Completed, her Ars Electronica winning breakthrough album. Poemproducer became her “internet name,” and has come to stand in for her idiosyncratic approach to vocal-based electronic music. Last November, AGF quietly released Poemproducer, almost exactly 20 years after Westernization Completed. Channeling her internet name into her first proper solo studio album since SOLIDCITY (2017), Poemproducer is built around mutating bass, freeplayed rhythms, and subtle field recordings. We discuss the evolution of her musical practice, her interest in pedagogy, feminism, collective politics and much more.

France Jobin has been exploring quantum theory for many years now, an interest that has shown up in her compositions, sound installations, and work with VR. But the pandemic finally afforded the Montreal-based minimalist composer time for deeper study with a personal brain trust of physicists she’d assembled over the years. Negativland has always been about media literacy; their sound collages and pranks are not only humorous but reveal something about how media function. But in recent years, as the world has changed around them, their  relationship to this aspect of their practice has had to evolve. What was subversive in the 80s is mostly met with a shrug today. While sampling has become less essential to their work, the group continues to reappropriate and recontextualize human speech, and in an age of AI voice clones, the importance of using actual voices becomes even more significant. Last fall, I sat down with Negativland’s Mark Hosler and Jon Leidecker (Wobbly) at Krakow, Poland’s Unsound festival to discuss the history of their long running group, the importance of radio, and how the changing mediascape has transformed the meaning of their work as collage has gone mainstream.

SP* Episode 39: REVERSE POLARITY - with Negativland [podcast]

The second part of a special double feature, returning us to Krakow’s Unsound festival, where we began with Episode 1. The inaugural episode featured Resina and Lea Bertucci, from Poland and New York, respectively, and so for the sake of symmetry, this episode pairs Antonina Nowacka and Dreamcrusher, two artists who make affective, vocal-based music, but to very different affects. That is to say, this is an episode that leans into contrasts: the US and Europe, home and away, morning and night, quiet and noise. We discuss non-dance DJ sets, the relationship between music and fashion, the joys and difficulties of traveling as an artist, and the adventurous programming of Unsound.

Regular mix contributor Stefan Christoff is joined by Scott Alexander Howard for our first new mix of 2025, A sonic window. We're pleased to announce that the duo will be releasing a joint album called  Transit Assemblies on the Moon Villain label on May 30, with pre-orders beginning on May 2.

Stefan writes:

This mix reflects a recent collaborative process that I have been working on with Scott, author, researcher and a friend from childhood. I first played music with Scott in a series of rolling punk bands when we went to the same highschool in British Columbia, eventually we moved toward an art rock project that we shaped with love in our late teenage years. A set of circumstances, mostly due to the fact there was little music infrastructure or support for the efforts we were making at the time, our lives took different paths. 

In the past year we have reconnected and are working on our first joint album to be released in 2025. This mix I feel represents both some musical explorations that shape our duet but also the sense of long term dialogue that is at the basis of our collaboration. It is excellent and inspiring to reconnect with a friend from many years ago to work on music and to exchange sonic worlds, the choices in this mix reflect that journey through a series of small windows of our musical interests, connections and community. SP* Episode 5: B SIDES - with Dinzu Artefacts [podcast]

Deep Minimalism (i) is a gentle excursion perfect for our shared moment of collective unease. Newsha Khalaj is a Vancouver-based violist and the author of this mix. She put this tracklist together with a purpose. As she explains, "I needed these soothing, shifting, deep-moving sounds—life was a little heavy for a while, for personal reasons—and these songs, this mix, is that."  Khalaj sent me the tracks and I mixed them live, which was a really meditative process.

In July, Khalaj played as part of the Slow New Way Ensemble for Nadia Sirota’s Living Music series, one of the more interesting quarantine concerts I've seen. The Ensemble performed the world premiere of a new work by Richard Reed Parry [Bell Orchestre, Arcade Fire], made especially notable as it was performed live via Zoom by musicians in Berlin, Montreal, New York and Los Angeles. Newsha Khalaj presents Deep Minimalism (i) [mix]

This mix accompanies the LISTENING THROUGH MIMAROĞLU episode,  featuring director Serdar Kökçeoğlu discussing his work and the Mimaroglu project in particular. I originally had in mind a second episode with interviews with other musicians I met while in Istanbul, but for a variety of reasons not everyone was comfortable speaking for audio, or we were otherwise unable to find an opportunity to record.  Of course there are also linguistic barriers. Save polished corporate aesthetics for the professionals, this podcast is more interested in something else. So instead I present İSTANBUL EKSPRES, a bonus mix of music from Istanbul artists old and new.

We spoke about some of her favorite Anatolian psychedelic bands, among other things. Since the 1990s, international music publications like the Wire have become hip to Turkish rock from the 60s and 70s. Artists from that era were often incorporating folk instruments from around the region into a rock ensemble context.  But that's just one facet of Turkish musical heritage.

Sample-based producers like Group Ses, working in styles influenced by hip hop, trap, beat tapes, etc, make up a vibrant scene of crate diggers, mining the rich history of Turkish (and Ottoman) recordings. 

İSTANBUL EKSPRES is my attempt to share some of this music. I don't claim any expertise, or pretense of exhaustive knowledge, just wanted to share  the music and voices of the amazing artists I met in Istanbul.

SP* Episode 14: İSTANBUL EKSPRES [mix]

Kassel Jaeger, once little more than a mysterious German moniker producing captivating music for our favorite boutique labels, has since been revealed to be François J. Bonnet, composer, philosopher, and now director Ina-GRM, France’s legendary center for electroacoustic research. No longer shrouded in mystery, his prolific output has lost none of its power. In the last year he’s released some of the best records of his career, including collaborations with Jim O’Rourke and Stephen O’Malley. Having grown accustomed to hearing Bonnet’s voice as host of France Musique’s L'Expérimentale, it was a trip to have the opportunity to sit down with him while he was in Montreal for 2019’s AKOUSMA festival. In this episode, Bonnet speaks with us about the development of his music, various acousmatic diffusion techniques, the privilege of composing for the acousmonium, and balancing the legacy of the GRM with the music to come.

SP* Episode 15: EIDOLONS  - with Kassel Jaeger [podcast]

Jeremy Young recently released Filaments on Eliane Tapes, Moving Furniture's sporadic series of work inspired by the remarkable French composer Éliane Radigue. The series was inaugurated with a release by Kassel Jaeger back in early 2018, and after a long silence two new tapes have just been released. To mark this occasion, we invited Young to produce a mix. Like me, Young is an American living in Montréal, Canada, so it was also nice to discover some connections between us. Young works primarily with reel-to-reel tape and contact miked objects and has worked on a wide variety of projects including sound-poetry and audio-visual scoring. We at ACL have long been fans of Jeremy's solo work as szilárd, and especially his trio Sontag Shogun and their predecessor (The) Slowest Runner (In All The World). And so it is our great pleasure to present Je Suis Mon Absence.

kicking off the new year with a special guest mix from @spirodon

"A conversation with my brother Jordan Christoff created this mix. First we were talking about Vaporwave and also stretching sound, then as often we were talking about Bulgaria, the Balkans and music, then Chalga came up. I also remembered some Yugoslavian pop tracks that were super beautiful and tragic which featured in the excellent film The Load, by Ognjen Glavonić, a very important piece of cinema about the complexities around the NATO bombing of Yugoslavia in 1999, this film is a must watch for anyone living in a member state of the NATO alliance. I watched that film with my father also, that was a very moving experience. For this mix I reworked some tracks from the Balkans, below are the names of the original songs, in no particular order, you won't be able to hear them directly in the mix, this is drone reimagination. Thanks for listening, Stefan Christoff."

Spirodon presents Chalga Drone Mix

When ACL first started producing mixes, I knew that I didn’t just want to invite artists and labels. We’ve always imagined ACL as a part of a broader community. As such I’ve often invited mixes from amateurs, from listeners and fellow critics. This mix is one of those. 

We have another special guest mix from Philippe Requena. We have previous featured two mixes from him, Venant le jour and Water Be My Road Now. As on those mixes, Requena moves in a post-genre sonic world, drawing unexpected connections between disparate selections.
