Happy Solstice! The Summer Solstice is the day with the longest period of daylight, and has come to mark the beginning of summer. So it seemed fitting to share this solarpunk inspired mix from @JordanChristoff. Back in 2015, Jordan and Patrick Dique (together known as PJS) put together Harvest, a unique installment in our Lost Children mix series. That may have been their earliest release, actually, but Jordan has been prolific in the years since, working with many of our favorite labels: Shimmering Moods, Muzan Editions, Constellation Tatsu, Phinery, Leaving, Past Inside the Present.  In addition to his work with PJS and as a solo artist, he is also part of Anarchist Mountains with his brother, Stefan Christoff.  [I was very lucky to join them for La terre et la force, released earlier this year.] And so I'm very glad to share post global solarpunk. This mix feels like a warm day basking in the sun, gentle and soothing vibes for a peaceful beginning of the summer.

Jordan Christoff presents 'post global solarpunk' [mix]

LER 1028: Picture Music – Picture Music

Concocted in a share house in the South of Brisbane in the mid-80s, a small collective of well-acquainted musicians including Jon Anderson, Rainer Guth, Gary McFeat & Rod Owen gathered to compose film soundtracks, music for pictures, therefore ‘Picture Music’. To this end, a ‘spec’ tape of Picture Music recordings would be produced to give to potential clients and or sold to local stores. A distinct album comprising a collection of ambient, minimal-jazz and experimental music.

If there is a red thread running through the Picture Music album, it is its "late night" ambience. The wrath of the sub-tropical summer heat of Brisbane is not kind on electronic equipment, which would crash regularly by day. So, all recording was done in the relative cool of the late evening, in a room only dimly lit by lamp and candle. The Picture Music collective would make music and party all through the night, departing around sunrise. They would sleep through the heat of the day, only to return in the evening for more of the same.

This 2021 double LP reissue of their self-titled 1987 cassette, was taken from the original master tapes and remains an evocative representation of the music that resulted from the late-night, dimly-lit, atmospheric-enabled environment, that sparked the creativity of a group of like-minded friends in a tiny corner of Brisbane.

Akio Suzuki constructed the Hinatabokko no kukan (Space in the Sun) in 1988. This space consists of two huge parallel walls, in between which the artist can sit all day and purify his hearing by listening to the reflected sounds of nature. This space leads the artist to discover a new method of listening. Suzuki himself comments, "Sound, which had been conceptually imprisoned in various spaces, is freed to circle the world."

Multicast Dynamics returns with a sixth studio album but one that marks something of a new chapter. Ancient Circuits is a departure from previous works on Denovali and one that stands the project aside as a powerful electronic act that tells stories while also serving up heavy hitting soundscapes that are persuasive, unexpected and disturbing. 

By now, Multicast Dynamics is revered for absorbing and journeying albums that are as immersive as a film or evocative as an audio book. Since 2015, long players like Aquatic System, Outer Envelopes, Continental Ruins and Lost World have explored imagined civilisations and futuristic histories in infinite detail. 

Ancient Circuits is another album with a very real sense of space - it places you in the middle of a sparse yet richly detailed world, with sonic illusions and synthetic realisations from a post-human world. Listening to this album is like being lost deep in the fabric of space itself, where ancient cosmology and modern technology intersect. 

Each of the four 25-minute pieces are clearly demarcated yet sequential stories that introduce new characters and are drawn out of long and complex studio experiments. They are collages of sound that glimmer, disturb, shine, dive deep and explore new realms. Sonic gradients and electronic pulses add dynamics and drive as you zoom in to microscopic levels of detail and revel in the information and density you find when you get there. 

This album is about technology that is well advanced yet no longer in existence today. An interface that has been heavily decayed after surviving many waves of history and extreme conditions and shows the signs of heavy wear and tear. It could well be a type of interface located in a hidden room, surrounded by organic debris and material decay, but one still responsive enough through a series of toggles, switches and dials to manipulate a sensory world.

Ancient Circuits is ambient so arresting that it pulls you deep inside. It is suspensory, storytelling music that keeps you on edge. It is as emotionally stirring as it is mentally evocative. Once again, it's an album that finds Multicast Dynamics draw together visual art, sound design, cinematic ideas and conceptual thinking to come up with a work that is a multi-sensory exploration that puts you as the central character in an expressive musical world.

Yann Novak is a queer interdisciplinary artist and composer based in Los Angeles. His work is guided by his interests in perception, context, movement, and the felt presence of direct experience. Through the use of sound and light, Novak explores how these intangible materials can act as catalysts to focus our awareness on our present location in space and time. Novak’s diverse body of works—audiovisual installations, performances, sound diffusions, recording, and prints—ask participants to reclaim the present moment as a political act. His work has been experienced through exhibitions and performance at AB Salon, Brussels; The Broad, Los Angeles; Commonwealth & Council, Los Angeles; de Young Museum, San Francisco; Fylkingen, Stockholm; Human Resources, Los Angeles; Iklectik, London; Institute of Modern Art, Brisbane; Mutek Festival, Montreal; and The Stone, New York, among others. His recorded sound works have been released by 901 Editions, Dragon’s Eye Recordings, LINE, Room40, and Touch, among others.
