‘Shapes On Shapes’ is the much anticipated debut album from LA based duo Wild & Free. Released this November on Portugal’s Discotexas, ‘Shapes On Shapes’ sees Drew Kramer and George Cochrane deliver on the promise of their early releases with 11 tracks of languorous poolside disco, tropical pop and Balearic house.
 
Both multi-instrumentalists, singers and producers in their own right, the pair came together in 2015 and have spent the past 2 years crafting a series of acclaimed EPs and remixes (for the likes of Panama, Gigamesh, Joe Goddard and Ben Browning of Cut/Copy) that saw them tipped by the likes of Spin, XLR8R, Indie Shuffle and many more and take their live show on the road playing alongside the likes of Brooklyn’s Body Language.

From the album’s opener, and title track, an intoxicating haze of ambient synths, dreamlike vocal samples and reverb drenched guitar licks, its clear Drew and George have stretched themselves to fully embrace the possibilities of the album format. It's also obvious that the band have named themselves well, as throughout the record there’s a looseness and sense of spontaneity that few studio based acts can pull off. 

Whether it’s the sun kissed pop of ‘River of Nilé’ and ‘Moment’, the exotic heady disco of ‘Tropique’ and ‘Ferns and Stuff’ or the dub inflected ‘Hiding Behind the Sun’, ‘Shapes On Shapes’ is one of the most joyous, life affirming albums you’ll hear this year.

“Mental Mother” can sound like the title to a gothic themed short story or Black Mirror episode, but the song itself has utopian strains, the synth progressions are uplifting, there is a feeling of assurance and warmth, the minds work prodvucing a nurturing mother, a better day, a sustaining world.

With every track on the EP, Project Sandro articulates cinematic and lush environs. With restraint and elegance the songs build soundscapes that give the listener room to engage with a range of emotions from the dark and foreboding to the light of some resolved clarity. Project Sandro does this at their own pace, nothing feels forced or contrived, there are no sleight of hands or overt manipulations, like all good art the songs have faith in their intent. The listener is offered a sense of place that they can inhabit, the specifics provided by our subjectivity, the songs rhythms carrying us to our destinations. Project Sandro’s first Ep is an assured offering and sets the standard for what hopefully will be a prolific oeuvre.

"Though his solo productions tend towards the weird, wild, and far-out, Raffaele “Whodamanny “Arcella has an incredibly well-honed pop sensibility, one that is often on full display during his energetic DJ sets and mixes. There you will find delirious collections of Italo dance magic spanning several decades, with Whodamanny cutting ecstatically between all manner of vocal oriented and neon-hued proto-house, synth pop, disco, boogie, and funk. And on the The Dance Sucker 12″, he perfectly combines his interests in futuristic sonic experimentation with the balearic euphorias of these club sets, resulting in some of the strongest and most surprising material yet to come from Periodica Records and the West Hill Studio. I say surprising for several reasons, not least of which is the presence of Arcella’s voice, which here is deliciously foregrounded…a sort of expressive croon moving through sultry serenades, summertime hooks, and sexual soul whispers. The 12” is also a marvel of synth programming, as every non-vocal sound here, including drums, has been sourced from the artist’s beloved Cazio CZ-101…a fact that is all the more remarkable given how colorful and physical everything is, with fat greasy basslines and infectious electro-rhythms dancing beneath a canopy of sci-fi squiggles, synthesized fusion solos, and pads that waver like a mediterranean mirage." PRD1014 • Whodamanny - "The Dance Sucker"

Following on from his 2019 solo album Poison Fruit, Azymuth’s drummer Ivan ‘Mamão’ Conti returns with ‘Katmandu’. Though it was recorded and mixed in the same sessions, ‘Katmandu’ was mysteriously omitted by Mamão from the Poison Fruit album, either accidentally or on purpose, he’s not quite sure. What is for sure is that it’s one of the most potent poison grooves of them all.

This EP is the second in a series of limited edition dance 12”s celebrating 25 years of Far Out Recordings and is housed in a special sleeve which uses the label’s original semiquaver logo from 1994.
