This week’s mix is an invigorating breath of fresh air courtesy of Japanese DJ and producer, Yukari Okamura.

We wholeheartedly adore the balance Yukari strikes between darkness and light, obscure mind-bending drones and psychedelic bliss - this mix being the perfect representation of her unique style which we’ve grown to love.

The originality of Yukari's productions is what initially caught our attention. With releases on the likes of Oslated, Circular Limited and OVUNQVE, all speaking to us in big, bold and beautiful ways, she immediately stood out as a prolific producer with an abundance of ideas and inspiration to share. We can’t wait to hear what's coming next.

As often extensively touring as he is on the quest for new sounds (‘the iron fence in front of the studio’, ‘the wooden door in the toilet’ among other samples), or building instruments from scratch with his pals (see Modular Organ System), Phillip Sollmann’s experimental zeal underscores a conceptual framework that reveals a collage of influences as broad as Basic Channel, Francis Bacon, Japan or the room he’s sitting in. This often amounts to smooth and genre-busting segues on Dial, Curle and Ostgut Ton. Mostly known for his rich and hypnotic live sets, he recorded for us a very deep and subtle DJ mix, showing a vast musical knowledge and an extreme quality in the mixing. With many percussive elements, and a vast array of soundscapes, this mix stands out for its clean sound and complex grooves organized in a smooth arrangement.

Helsinki-based DJ and curator @laura_mrls is known to project a beautiful and ever-reforming blend of eerie, melancholic and cinemascopic sounds in straightforward and hypnotic techno. The non-binary artist contributes to the Berlin club scene by being a resident artist of the trans-led event series and label, @subvertedscene. They are also a member of the Norwegian techno platform, festival and label, @monument-podcast.

Laura MRLS has played their dark but energetic DJ sets in venues like @tresorberlin and @about-blank-berlin in Berlin, Hall in Tallinn, The Garage of the Bass Valley in Barcelona and Helsinki’s Post Bar, Kaiku and Ääniwalli. Their @affinedarkscience [AFDS] radio show at IDA Helsinki also just turned into a label which will follow with the artist’s first own productions.

Few artists can match the influence that Enrique Mena, AKA Svreca, and his label Semantica have had on contemporary techno. With over 20 years in the DJ booth, 200-plus releases on the label and some acclaimed original productions and remixes, Svreca has spearheaded techno’s second generation, helping maintain Madrid as an international hub for deep and driving sounds. 

As a DJ, Svreca draws from a wide sonic palette that includes noise, dub, avant-garde electronics, electro and, of course, techno. First, it was luminaries like Angel Molina and Oscar Mulero that inspired him; since then he has made it his mission to survey the scene and connect with its most original artists. He funnels these influences into a powerful techno sound for body and mind: immersive, textural and rhythmically complex. Whether in an open-air festival setting or a blistering, pitch-back basement, Svreca’s sets—always delivered with technical precision—are a psychedelic, physical experience. 

His sets are also inextricably linked to Semantica. It’s a two way relationship: the label has become a consistently excellent breeding ground for new talent, as well as home to some of techno’s finest artists. Equally, Svreca draws inspiration from shared moments on a dance floor to fuel the label’s creative direction. From its austere aesthetic (designed by Mena himself) to its boundless exploration of new formats, Semantica encapsulates the heady spirit of experimental techno.

Growing up in the late 80s, under the influence of acid house & the impact of Belgian Techno, Milton started to shape his sound around electronic music that led him to create his own label  “Do Not Resist the Beat!” in 2008. Constantly searching and experimenting with new sounds he also created the 90s acid-inspired project “Alien Rain” and the ambience project, “The End Of All Existence”, which he premiered live at the Berlin Atonal festival in 2014. Italian DJ and electronic music producer born in 1987 in Sardinia, based in Berlin. Co-founder of TGP.

Claudio PRC is an italian deep techno specialist who takes cues from avant-garde and ambient music as well as the abyssal echoes of early hypnotic acid and dub. He’s been active as a DJ and producer since 2006 and released his records mainly on Prologue Music and Semantica Records. Co-founder of The Gods Planet label, from 2018 he’s resident DJ in one of Prague’s most valued clubs, Ankali, where he curates the Volumi Dinamici night.

Fabrizio Lapiana is a well-known fixture on the contemporary Italian techno scene. His musical career started in his hometown Rome where he began collecting vinyl and DJ’ing in the early 90’s. 

After being mainly active on the local scene, Fabrizio in 2008 started producing and founded his own imprint, the well renowned Attic Music. The label quickly expanded from hosting just Fabrizio’s work into also releasing other artists fitting his personal definition of techno. To date Fabrizio has over two handfuls of releases, Attic Music serves as home to some of these, but also other respected labels such as ARTS, Figure Jams and M_Rec Ltd to mention a few. His productions are often dark and hypnotic, yet at times they have brighter melodious elements, with each of these components smoothly entering as the tracks unfold.

However playing records to a live audience is still his favourite element. Fabrizio has honed and perfected his deejaying skills for over two decades, therefore being famous for his immaculate mixing technique. To create the setting he prefers, his sets travel from deeper to harder techno, darker pieces are introduced to more melodic ones and acid or old school gems get updated with new unheard material – these are some of the key ingredients for Fabrizio while creating an intimate journey for the listener. 

Lapiana’s latest achievement as a composer is his debut album “Intraverso” released in February 2018. With this collection of nine songs the artist departs from his previously dancefloor-focused work into something new and far more personal than where he has ever been before. The album shows slower, down-tempo, ambient influenced and more thoughtful compositions, unraveling light, darkness, happiness and sadness. “Intraverso” reveals an artist shedding another layer of himself, showing a softer more vulnerable side to the world.
