This mix is all about education. What you have in this mix are some of my favorite hip-hop records (well, Alicia Keys isn't really hip-hop, but whatever, Kanye did his thing on that track) paired back-to-back with their original samples. Uncovering original samples and mixing them with their hip-hop counterparts is something I've been obsessed with for a while. This is what I originally intended to do on my radio show on WNYU, but I ended up just playing strictly original jazz, funk, and soul tracks that have been sampled over the years. Some of these joints you'll probably recognize, and some you may not. But, at the end of the day, hopefully, it will open your eyes on how some of the illest producers in the game can re-create and flip great, and sometimes mediocre tracks, into some amazing and timeless hip-hop. Enjoy.

"Sleepwalking"

Another day in the life, indeed. "Sleepwalking" takes the listener through the worrisome aftermath of a homicide that occurred earlier in the day and shows the neighborhood's speculative reaction to it. The narrator, vaguely familiar with the victim, recognizes the gossip and talking points as a source of entertainment for the inhabitants of the neighborhood; people who are themselves flawed yet attempting to pass blind judgment and make split-second assumptions about the dead. As much as the track highlights how dehumanized people have become by the loss of human life, the centralized point here is how everyone and everything can be a reflection of ourselves....And unfortunately people of lesser quality feel the need to make that comparison.

 DJ Rampage (born Cory Hinks in Belize City, Belize) is a Hip Hop/Reggae DJ that now lives in Harlem, NY.  He is currently Ms. Lauren Hill’s DJ on tour and has been a part of the World Famous Scratch Academy since 2003, where he teaches the fundamentals of DJ’ing. In 2006, he was the official truth® DJ on “SCREAM TOUR 2006.”   DJ Rampage spins numerous genres of music namely; House, Reggae, Hip Hop, Funk, Dance Hall, Rap but the list does not end there.   He keeps his presence known when he returns to NY by DJ’ing at various venues such as Crush, BOB’s Lounge, Marquee, Porky’s, Kopa Cabana, Duvet, Canal Room, White Rabbit, Sin Sin just to name a few.  Rampage represents youthful determination as a DJ.  He is someone that loves music and his turntablist skills speak volumes.

Basically, I'm a child of 90's hip-hop. I always have been and always will be. Don't get me wrong, there's plenty of dope hip-hop on the market today (mainstream and underground), but to me, the eight-year period spanning from 1990 - 1998 was a hip-hop Renaissance that will probably never be duplicated. And DJ Stretch Armstrong and Bobbito Garcia (AKA Cool Bob Love, AKA DJ Cucumber Slice, AKA the ten thousand other nicknames this dude has) were probably two of the most influential people in the game at that time. I'm not gonna go into a long history regarding their show on WKCR, but from 1990 - 1998, during the hours of 1-5 AM every Thursday night / Friday morning, these two, for lack of a better term, "smashed the airwaves" of the New York metropolitan area. Their show was responsible for launching the careers of Nas, Mobb Deep, Big L, Jay-Z, Big Pun, Fat Joe, The Notorious B.I.G., A Tribe Called Quest, The Beatnuts, Black Moon, Redman, The Wu-Tang Clan, and the list goes on and on. Since I was too young during the show's heyday, I've had to feed my addiction for this show by scouring the internets for uploaded tapes from listeners from back in the day. What I did with this mix was try to showcase some of the joints that were spun on their show beginning in 1990 and ending in 1998. I compiled all the tracks to make it seem like you're listening to an actual taping of the show. All of these tracks were played on WKCR at least once (some more than others). I even threw in some of my favorite freestyles and exclusives, which were taken directly from old cassettes. I've got a ton of these old recordings, and it was really difficult to decide what to include/exclude, but hopefully, you'll get a sense of their legendary show and the evolution of classic hip-hop over a legendary eight-year period. Also, shout out to the good peoples at <a href="http://Philaflava.org" rel="nofollow" target="_blank">Philaflava.org</a> for supplying me and the rest of the Stretch &amp; Bob fiends with hundreds of old tapes. Turn that shit up....

»When the east is in the house, oh my god, danger!« Was 1995 als Schlachtruf aus jedem Jeep-Lautsprecher dröhnte, war die Hook des legendären Tracks »Danger« vom New Yorker Rap-Duo Blahzay Blahzay, bestehend aus MC Outloud und DJ P.F. Cuttin. Letzterer sollte auch nach Auflösung der Gruppe mit seinen Mixtapes die zweite Hälfte jenes mythischen Jahrzehnts von Wanderstiefeln und Daunenjacken, von Tarnuniformen und Baggy Jeans prägen. Die Dekade, in der HipHop seinen Siegeszug durch deutsche Jugendzimmer und Partykeller fortsetzte, der bereits Mitte der achtziger Jahre begonnen hatte. Eine Zeit, in der die allermeisten Augen strikt nach New York gerichtet waren, in die Geburtsstadt der Subkultur, wo mystische Helden wie The Notorious B.I.G., Busta Rhymes, Jay-Z, Gang Starr und der Wu-Tang Clan einen kantigen Soundtrack für den alltäglichen Kampf durch den Großstadtdschungel entwarfen: »Boom« machte die Bassdrum, »Bap« antwortete die Snare.

Fast Forward ins Jahr 2012, und genau diese Ästhetik ist heute gefragter denn je: Dank Referenzen bei jungen, relevanten Rap-Künstlern wie Mac Miller und Joey Bada$$, die sich wieder auf die »Goldene Ära« beziehen und die überbordende Kreativität dieser Zeit an die Stelle der kommerziellen Stangenware des aktuellen Mainstreams setzen. Aber auch dank der zahlreichen 90s-Revival-Partys, die jedes Wochenende tausende von Jugendlichen in die entsprechenden Clubs der deutschen Großstädte locken. Die einfache Erklärung für dieses Phänomen: Jedes populäre Musikgenre hat seine Blütezeit. Die Sechziger im Jazz, die Siebziger im Rock, die Achtziger im Pop. In den neunziger Jahren war HipHop der rebellische, unangepasste Ausdruck eines urbanen Lebensgefühls. »Danger: Classic N.Y. HipHop Anthems« kompiliert 18 der wichtigsten HipHop-Hymnen dieses Jahrzehnts - als Startpunkt für Neuankömmlinge wie Nostalgiker, als Sammlung von offensichtlichen Hits und verlorenen Perlen. Recorded in 2003 on a Tascam multitrack recorder, mixed with an original! Roland 808 drummachine, a Roland MS1 sampler and a bunch of random Hip Hop, Soul and whatever genre records!

We continue 25 years of Solid Steel with a mix from Photek, a legendary figure in music since the early nineties who featured many times on the show with tracks from Modus Operadi, Form & Function up to Pyramid from his recent album Ku:Palm, plus 'Into the 90's' from 1994 that also featured on Coldcut's Journeys by DJ mix CD. As ever we wanted something different and this mix titled 'Solid Steel Skool Dayz' suggests the music he listened to growing up with classic tracks from Gwen McCrae, ELO, Roxy Music, Inner Life and Joyce Sims.
