I made you a mix tape of super cool mostly local kids and their super cool mostly local tracks. This list is by no means definitive given how thick and heavy Melbourne is with talent but is a small sample of those I've had the pleasure to see, perform alongside and admire. Parallel to creating woozy extended synth pop jams in duo Video Ezy (Paradise Daily) as well as pushing dynamic textural noise forms into unique shapes in UTI (duo with Maya Kjellstrand of Bleach Boys, Leopard Leg), Buchanan has arrived at a precision nexus of brutalist techno and a truly uplifting style of ecstatic melodic synth riffage. Conjuring thick atmospheres and tonalities with almost blu-ray levels of vibrancy is perhaps in essence attributable to the simplicity of her chosen elements; 1 synth, 1 drum machine - the rest is purely incendiary sparks, resonating brightly in the spaces in between. For fans of Helena Hauff, Regis, Nitzer Ebb.

Slow Down (Demo)

Shiny Coin and SPIT are joining forces to realise a split tape this August.

Releasing their first tape back in 2015, Shiny Coin (Sharni, Cale, and Shamus) recently returned from their very first east coast tour, to record some of their catchy, fuzzy pop songs with Mike Deslandes from High Tension.

SPIT debuted in November of last year. Taking their cues from bands like Pavement, Abe Vigoda and Constant Mongrel, SPIT play fast and loud but slack as hell. Off the back of high praise from The AU Review for their set supporting Mere Women's album launch at The Curtin, they're now preparing to release their first four tracks. Recorded and mixed by Stacey Wilson of Terrible Truths/Rites Wild, they will be available as part of a split tape with Melbourne's Shiny Coin.

The two bands formed a friendship after playing together late in 2016 and have been pals ever since. Releasing songs together seemed like the perfect way to consolidate their momentum.

This split tape captures both bands at a pivotal point in their songwriting. Songs about the futility of modern life, capitalism, love, and dogs.

See them launch their effort at the Tote Upstairs on August 12 with support from the amazing HEXDEBT and Piss Factory.
