“For Scott Zacharias’s No Way Back: Streaming From Beyond set we asked him to bridge the 24 hour continuous NWB into the Outer Space room, coming on directly after Mozhgan’s deeply mesmerizing set. At the physical event, No Way Back has 2 rooms. The No Way Back room, and the Outer Space room. Scott has a unique function unseen anywhere else in the world, coming on at dawn in the Outer Space room after a night of ambient and experimental music, taking an audience that is often laying on the mats on the floor in a blissed out state, and elevating them first in mind, and then in body as he channels his own freeform take on the sleaze tradition. He starts formless and then begins to bring in compelling and psychedelic gems, inching the tempo up so slightly over the course of many hours until the whole floor is pulsating in an under 110 bpm heaven. After nights of major psychedelic experiences, this allows for a kind of mental freedom. This is so crucial, the weekend is a marathon, and you come in to hear Scott to be recharged, it is food for the mind and soul, as he goes from ambient to everywhere you need to be. For the stream, we asked our favorite dharma bum to do this in reverse, since it was a one room stream, starting with NWB and ending in Outer Space, he began with the deep groove and slowly disintegrates it into oblivion, leaving you in Outer Space as only he can. We asked for a 3 hour set and got 4 hours, and we couldn’t edit one out, it's just too pure.” — BMG

No Way Back: Streaming From Beyond

A 36+ hour take on No Way Back, with 24 hours of the No Way Back room residents and 12+ hours of the Outer Space room immediately following. An excess of the mindmelting wormhole dance experience followed by many hours of floating in space and beyond. When we considered podcasting some sets, we decided to just release them all, one week at a time, in an order different than their original broadcast, with the concept of bringing further ideas with the continuum to light.

For us the toughest moment of the pandemic shut down was the thought that we could not gather on Memorial Day weekend for our annual rite of No Way Back. We need our community now more than ever, to connect and to feel free, in a world of shifting real and unreal realities, sequestered in isolation, how can we get together? Time feels different now, we have more patience for everything, so we applied that space for exploration to the sets at No Way Back, extending them to 3 hours so the DJs can fully explore their ideas.

The Electrifyin' Mojo would say "if you reach the end of your rope, just tie a knot and don’t let go" and this stream and podcasts are our knot. This was the first ever NWB without a defined space, without the transformational art of Amber Gillen and crew, let's hope we can get together in the future safely. Grab a little bit of netting or a parachute, turn on some red lights, move into another dimension. Please stay safe and live to dance another day.

Q. How would you describe yourself?
A. An amorphous blob/orb that likes to wiggle & and dance :)

Q. What was your last memorable club night in NYC?
A. Funnily enough many of my memorable NYC club nights have been with persons in series :). My last NYC club night was with adab. I'm pretty incredibly lucky I got to have that as one of my last club experiences before the pandemic - I think about it all the time. Our friend Shane aka Kiernan Laveaux was also present, and so were some other friends, which made it extra wonderful. adab is a sonic sibling and I look up to them a lot, we got to play separately and back to back. Their set was so profoundly deep and spiritual, and our B2B was like flying at Warp-8, we got to play faster Jungle and DnB and dance around. It was one of the most joyous I’ve felt in a long time. Another notable NYC club experience was an all-night “stop and start” with the one and only Physical Therapy, the heads know. ;)

Q. Tell us a little bit about this mix.
A. I made this mix thinking about what I would like to listen to at a freaky stage called “The Way In” that was at Honcho Campout last year. The visual and memory is so visceral to me, it’s a place my mind travels to often during these times. Slinky, shimmery & freaky in the glow of sunrise. I’ve been listening to a lot of Trip Hop during lockdown, so this is undeniably influenced by those sounds. I miss the feeling of dancing slow, and fast, at the same time, and hugging friends on the dance floor. 

Some hum, crackle and mistakes in here for good measure, so you know I’m a hooman.

livwutang is the alias of rising Seattle-based DJ and artist Olivia Klutse. Moving to the city from Denver in 2014, she has quickly become an integral and vital member of Seattle’s underground music community, forming numerous friendships and helping organize events for a number of the city’s budding parties. Truancy Volume 271 sees livwutang put together a mix inspired by dusk window views, coastal road trips, and long meandering walks around south Seattle. She tells us the mix is a reflection of her state of mind and the transitional Seattle weather at the moment, sprinkling in subtle moments of euphoria and ascending atmospheres to joyous effect. Influences: It started with my dad introducing me to Pink Floyd in 7th Grade. I fell in love with that dark, psychedelic vibe almost instantly. We would drive around listening to music, trading music trivia back and forth. Then in high school I dove into hip-hop and rap and started making beats. That eventually led me to trip hop (Bonobo, DJ Shadow, Flying Lotus, etc.) From there I discovered Shlohmo (whose track 'Big Feelings' is tucked into the intro of the mix), Lapalux, XXYYXX, Baths, etc. That trippy emotive stuff still comes through in my mixes. As a DJ/Producer, my peers are by far my greatest influences: everyone in UN/TUCK, Coughman, Dan Miles, Octo Octa, ADAB and Kiernan Laveaux, to name a few. But the list goes on for real. That's what I love most about this scene—it's a real melting pot of energies and every interaction is transformative in some palpable way.

Gag Reflex is like a dream. No, better, cause dreams aren't absolutely perfect and don't smell nice. So yeah, she's like... heaven personified! Hyper talented (like, hyper hyper); funny af, v v kind, extremely cute, brave.. the list goes on. this seattle bb works hard for her community, not only by being a lovely friend but also by throwing her transfeminist bloom nights and DJing like a hurricane of perfection for the benefit of the realest ravers and misfits. i've been lucky enough to hang out with her and some of her lovely crew in seattle and felt right at home with them. oh lawd i also smoked some weed there that knocked me out but Odessa was right my by side in the club while i snored with my mouth open, protecting me from outside threats lol! anyway - if you haven't yet, you should listen to her naivety EP 'The Fae' and her track on the naive comp cause you'll get an idea of how much of an incredible artist wer're talking about here (more things to come!). this naivetape is a prime example of why she is so good, mixing raucous rave inspiration with elegant techno, acid of the highest order, electro and some delicious club weirdness for good measure. i just.... i just wished we lived in the same city. but at least i'm lucky enough that we exist at the same time ¯\_(ツ)_/¯ that's my consolation prize.

Miah Benton (adab) puts heavy emphasis on presenting the margins of existence and sound through their djing. The now Philadelphia resident started spinning various eras of dance music as a result of finding Cleveland's queer techno party & crew In Training and being a Chicago born queer youth raised across a few states in the Rustbelt.
