Swedish pianist Peter Lundberg interviews composer Carrie Bruggeman "Cal" Stark at her home near St. Louis, Missouri, in 1963. The daughter-in-law of classic ragtime publisher John Stark, her best known tune is "They Gotta Quit Kickin' My Dawg Aroun'." This recording may be difficult to listen to for everyone except the most enthusiastic ragtime fans because Cal Stark was quite elderly and had retired from performing by the time of the interview. Legendary pianist and composer Irving Fields probably made this record -- his very first! -- around 1937, when Irving Berlin wrote the featured songs. The somewhat "symphonic" or classically influenced arrangements on this recording are probably the result of Mr. Fields's training at the Eastman School of Music. Later, Irving became a more typical pianist of popular and dance music. He became known as a specialist in Latin American styles, playing all over the world and selling millions of records for RCA Victor as well as other labels. Today he is 99 years young and continues to play every week in New York City.

Adam Swanson is one of the world’s foremost performers of vintage American popular music, including ragtime, early jazz, the Great American Songbook, and more. He holds a bachelor’s in classical piano and a master’s in musicology from the Peabody Conservatory of Johns Hopkins University. Although he is only twenty-five years old, Adam has been a featured performer and lecturer at ragtime and jazz festivals across the United States, and he is the only four-time winner of the World Championship Old-Time Piano Playing Contest. He made his New York debut in Carnegie Hall at the age of nineteen, where he performed with Michael Feinstein. Adam has performed at the Cinecon Classic Film Festival in Hollywood and the Kennedy Center in Washington, D.C., as well as in Hungary and Switzerland. He has worked with such musicians as Toronto’s John Arpin, former rock star Ian Whitcomb, and legendary 1950s recording artist Johnny Maddox, who is one of Adam’s greatest influences.
