Vybz Kartel aka Addi Innocent, Dancehall's biggest star, is imprisoned for 35 years for murder and is in jail since September 2011 - yet still he has a bigger output than any other dancehall artiste. His tunes rule every dance, are being played in every taxi in Jamaica and get the biggest forwards. His family refers to a stock of more than 600 unreleased songs, rumours on the streets have it that he records in his cell with an Iphone.

“I’m not a DJ anymore I just like playing records”
When AD first started playing out records it was in 1989 following the birth of Acid House, before that he collected breaks and beats and was lured into the art of DJing by the likes of Grandmaster Flash, Jazzy Jeff and DJ Harvey who hails from his hometown in Cambridge. In the past AD has played for Tonka Sound System on the beach in Brighton, and several residences in Brighton until he hung up his headphone in 1997. It was in 2007 that he started to play out again and has played at Bad Passion, Lovebox Festival, Big Chill, Secret Garden and for Jezebel with his DJ partner Adrian Fillary as The Straight A’s. Collecting records and playing records with friends is at the centre of his love of music and although he has respect for those that have made a career in music now it’s just a part-time love affair.

"For the second installment in their 12” series Music From Memory present two deeply forward thinking electronic tracks from British musician Michal Turtle made between 1983-4.

The first track ‘Are you Psychic?’ is taken from Turtle’s obscure ‘Music From The Living Room’ album which Michal recorded literally in the living room of his family’s South London house at the young age of 22.

Over-running his parents' front room with various synthesizers, amps and instruments, and setting up a portable four track studio the ‘Music From The Living Room’ tracks were built around live jams that took place alone or sometimes with musicians he would invite to play alongside him. Whilst seemingly sample based the instruments were played live and any voices or sound effects were actually recorded directly to tape, or put onto tiny 2.5 second cassette loops.

‘Astral Decoy’ was made in the year following the release of his only solo LP and forms part of a series of unreleased tracks that reflect a growing interest in combining electronics with more analogue elements such as Xylophone and live percussion. At the same time this track draws inspiration from the sound of electro and boogie which Michal had become greatly interested in at the time, and in particular the work of musicians such as Grandmaster Flash.

With access to the archives of the many recordings made at his family home, this 12” serves as an introduction to a wider compilation of Michal Turtles works which is to follow on Music From Memory."

We premiered first NAAR some weeks ago with the track Le Clerc by Man Power. "Not An Animal" returns with their 2nd installment, this time from Ess O Ess (aka Chris Stoker co head-honcho of the label and his pal Jamie Blanco) Package is made of three tracks, the original mix backed with two remixes. One being by japanese Chida, owner of "Ene Records" and the other featured here, by prolific Los Angeles producer Suzanne Kraft (remember the devastating "Renee Running" under his moniker "Dude Energy") with a juxtaposed tropical techno - with added dub - approach to his interpretation. It's out early junuary 2016, Enjoy !
