When the World Feels Small

Here is the title track from the debut album from Penelope's Thrill, just released on Bandcamp (and Spotify, etc.). This album has been a labor of love, recorded and mixed over the past lockdown year in my tiny home studio (Yew Tree Studios).

The inspiration for the album actually came from the accidental necessities of the pandemic: On my regular trips down to my 88-year-old mother, who lives about an hour south of Madison, to bring groceries and supplies, I'd always drive home on the winding backroads, usually hitting Tunnel Road at sunset (see album photo). That route is now engraved on my mind: Marshall Bluff Road to Exeter Crossing Road, to Tunnel Road to Argue Road. This route roughly follows the very edge of the "Driftless" Region of Wisconsin, that is the area that was not covered by the glaciers during the last Ice Age 10,000 years ago. So along this route there are all sorts of rock outcroppings, drumlins, and other glacial artifacts, and you can often see the actual line where the glacier stopped. The area has a charged spiritual feeling, especially at twilight--a "thin place," as the Irish would say.
Anyway, week after week, month after month, the songs came to me as I drove back along this stretch and imagined the lives of Lonnie and Chloe (the focus of the album). I even picked out the exact farms where they lived....

Main guitars on this track are a Gretsch 5422T with a custom made solid brass bridge (which gives it a pretty unique tone) and a Gretsch 5622T (hitting the Bigsby).

This one's for all the mamas. My kid has been throwing a lot of fits lately and this is mostly about that. I thought snotty pop/rock really captured that frenzied emotional state best. Between myself, my toddler, and my baby... everybody wants a piece of mama.

Myrh had been preparing for this meeting for a long time. The man, whom everyone called only "The Beast", came to the settlement in which she was the ruler. The beast was known for always collecting exorbitant tribute from all villages, and he did not care how people would live after he left.
Myrh treated him to a joint, and then he began to talk about money, and His face gradually began to resemble a pig's snout. Myrh answered him about the farmers. No money, no food. No food, no farmers. No farmers - no money! Ferstein?

And he understood.

Baby of the 80s, teen of the 90s, obsessed with the 60s and 70s; an FM wannabe in a Youtube world. I guess I just wasn't made for these times. I like songwriting in the Gershwin, Tin Pan Alley, Lennon/McCartney tradition. I prefer records to singles. I prefer three minutes to ten.

According to my mama, I was whistling before I learned to talk. I played organ in the Memphis garage rock scene between 2000 and 2016. I've done a lot of studio work, adding keys to records by songwriters that I really admire.

I'm now focused on recording my own songs. I have a minimal home recording set up with a laptop, microphones, cheap guitars, drums, piano, and a grab bag of other toys. All my lyrics rhyme with the truth, or at least I think they do. 

Life is short and there are more good songs then there are raindrops. Which is to say: thank you very much for lending me your ears.

Rock 'n' roll is dead, long live rock 'n' roll.
