Living in the Dutch countryside, Julien Mier spent the last several years crafting heavily melodic and carefully textured pieces that engage the listener both cognitively and emotionally. His newest EP, Changing Currents, is a culmination of his exploration of natural sounds, and ultimately serves as a final farewell to the cabin he was living in directly up to the point of this works’ completion. 

Each piece on the release serves the whole, with opening track “It’s Slightly Open” providing the introductory sounds and pacing before moving to the melodic second track “Yesterday’s Downpour.” Meditative guitar piece “Caught in the Chest” is the anchor holding everything together thematically. Slow, brooding and beautiful, the piece finds its success in its minimalistic, stripped-down approach. 

In the increasingly maximalist world of electronic music, Changing Currents confidently espouses the value of minimalism, reducing each instrument to its most rewarding timbres, and comfortably discarding the expected tropes of the genre. Every melody hints at a range of emotions all the while avoiding the awkwardness of the melodramatic. 

It’s a testament to Mier’s refinement and poise as an electronic musician. He is using the medium for something very personal, both in the places he explores and the musical techniques he uses to explore them.

El material sonoro que se presenta en esta producción, es un copilado grabado directamente sobre terreno de algunas comunidades indígenas de Talamanca, en cooperación con mi labor de investigación como etnomusicólogo y antropólogo de la música. Muchas gracias al gran aporte de Jorge Luis Acevedo Vargas del Conservatorio de Música de la Universidad de Costa Rica por su gran inspiración y trabajo. Dichas compilaciones fueron grabadas con condiciones sumamente difíciles por los contextos geográficos y socioculturales de nuestros territorios indígenas. Por el cual le solicitamos el público interesado en valorar esta antología sonora, no desde una visión técnica sino pedagógica y amplia de nuestras manifestaciones musicales con nuestros pueblos originarios costarricenses.
Dentro del materia sonoro seleccionado en la investigación recopilamos Cantos de Sorbón (bul), Cantos Sukias (awapa), cantos de adoración y algunos elementos mágicos de algunos animales que describen características y habilidades propios de las selvas de Talamanca como es la danta (Naí) el gavilan (Tsai) , el armadillo (Tsawaí) y el tigre (Nmú),  Con el objetivo de dar a conocer y promover nuestras variadas manifestaciones musicales y culturales de nuestros pueblo originarios, producido con mucho respeto y admiración.

Flow EP 

After being diagnosed with cancer in 2015 I realized that in order to heal I needed to change and balance all areas of my life, including the type of music I would make, and perform.  After spending years of making music that was focused on seeking out success in the scene I was in the States, I decided that to be totally free i had to let go of what others thought about me and my music.  The result is that I am now creating from a place that is aligned with my spirit.  

I chose to name my first EP Flow because this has been my very intention for the last couple of years, as I strove to balance myself and let go of rigid ways of being, no longer identifying with some of the boxes I use to, my health journey has helped me open up, and truly let life happen in the exact way that it is flowing.

“Falling Down,” was written by my best friend when we were in a rock band together.   it was my favorite song that he had written and I told him that I wanted to make an electronic music track out of it.  Unfortunately, Dave will not be able to hear this song because he passed away two years ago.  But his memory lives on and Falling Down is my tribute to my friend and his work and my deep gratitude for a friendship that was based off of unconditional love, respect and honor.
