"This set is a recording from my closing set on NYE at London’s Venue MOT. As someone who is probably just as in love with curating as I am with DJing, I get really excited when I connect with a line up & understand what role I might have to play in the unfolding of the night. This one had a bit of everything, Djrum / mama snake / priori / jon k / jossy mitsu & I really wanted to bring something special together to reflect the array of sounds across the night whilst also keeping it quite fun and nostalgic. A nod to that special energy that we all feel on New Years Eve where everyone wants to hug their friends and tell them they love them. The set starts with a fun peak time energy before melting away into some slower sludgy sounds. By the end of the night there were only a few people left floating around the dance floor, everyone with their heads down and eyes closed, just swaying their bodies. My favourite time of night."

Technology continues to improve the lives of producers, most significantly the marvel of file transfer and electronic chat. Thus now enters a production friendship which spans the great North American continent. From Vancouver comes DJ Hockey. This lithe and prodigious talent is among a close cohort of pure, renegade artists composing the PNW underground community. On any given weekend, he and others like Adam Two are hauling speakers, fast at work on a new PPRZ release, or performing around a lineup of other stalwart heroes like Juana, Lonefront, and Patrick Russell. 
Thus when listener and web browser, Associate, took notice of DJ Hockey's invigorating and stripped down techno. It only took a few listens before he began his usual direct messaging campaign of heaping praise. Associate resides in the USA capital on the east coast, Washington, DC. After a trip abroad he saw his only path forward to include production. He spent his life continuously immersed with electronic music from his erstwhile point of origin, the midwest, and after 40 or 50 plugin purchases and numerous lessons, he finally took to it. In one afternoon, he was able to remix a DJ Hockey banger and the split EP idea was born.

Bristol-based @k_means operates at the fringes of electronic music. It's not tempo and genre that unites their sound, but more an exploration of mood and texture underpinned by bass-heavy low ends and hypnotic rhythms. The Noods, Rinse FM and Kiosk Radio regular is also resident at Bristol's Psychotherapy Sessions and will debut at Dekmantel Festival where you should fully expect to be taken into plenty of unknown musical territory.

It is the same with their mix for us this week - a wild trip into futuristic drum patterns and interplanetary sounds that melt the mind and contort the body. There is a constant push and pull between the organic and the synthetic with tribal percussion and warped vocals brushing up with bleeping synth modulations and experimental minimalism. It's a magnetic selection that's as much an imaginary movie soundtrack as it is a dance floor escape.

Washington, DC based artist and rising star Marshall Stukes’s core identity has been closely tied to the exposure and exploration of music. His lifelong, multi-genre musical journey began as a child with his parents exposing him to rap and hip-hop, R&B, and jazz; while self exploration as a teenager led to his love for rock and metal. Now his excursion has landed him in the world of techno and electronic music. Although he has loved music his whole life, Marshall started dabbling in music production after his best friend showed him FL Studio, a day which Marshall admits changed his life. After creating for over a decade, Marshall finally found his calling in producing techno, and has expanded his career as a resident DJ for two of DC’s prime techno all-nighters BLACK TECHNO MATTERS and Undertone. Whether it’s hard hitting 155bpm, or chill 130bpm, Marshall, who DJ’s and produces as STUKES, plays music that is true to who he is, past and present.

We are thrilled to present this mix by Chicago based JS Alvarez for our 39th entry in the series. Both Adam and I admire what Jeremy contributes to the music scene with their podcast and event series Research & Development.

JS Alvarez is a shape shifting lizard that has learned human behavior from living in cities such as Chicago and Miami. He succumbs to no one genre and can be found exploring the depths of mutant techno and unruly bass music alike.

He is the founding member of Research & Development which ignited in the iconic Chicago mainstay of Smartbar. The event series has moved on to host community focused events centered on a wide variety of often cutting edge electronic sounds at venues like Podlasie Club, The Whistler and various DIY spaces. R&D also hosts a biweekly podcast 100+ episodes deep ranging from rising talents, hometown heroes and well established DJs and producers from North America and around the world.

He's shared the booth with artists such as DVS1, Veronika Vasicka, D.Dan, Hodge and others. His mixes have been featured on NTS Radio, Mutant Radio and SutroFM among others. Catch him at The Great Beyond this July! 

I was trying to find a very textured sound within the first quarter of the mix. My attempt at some sort of atmospheric sci-fi horror score followed by something a bit more hypnotic. By the end of the mix I wanted those vibes to explode into something highly rhythmic. Something to shatter what came before and get the sweat dripping off the walls.

Mina Mills is a Chicago based DJ and producer from Des Moines, Iowa. She plays techno and house music.

Description of mix: This mix was recorded using two Audio-Technica AT-LP120 direct drive turntables, one deck of a Numark Mixdeck Express and a Xone 62 mixer. This is the DJ equipment that I have access to and I've grown to really love it.

For our 41st entry into the PPRZ Podcast series, we are hosting a proper techno journey mix courtesy of Detroit based Nick Burgess. Slowly built tension and release, dreamy atmospheres and all around deep listening propelling into tougher grooves. What more could you ask for?!

Nick Burgess is a student of Detroit, prioritizing the groove while seamlessly weaving between deep acidic Techno hypnosis and punishing Industrial sonics. In the short time since making his debut, Nick has played every hour of the night across notable Detroit venues such as Leland City Club, Marble Bar, Tangent Gallery and several D.I.Y. locations. He has shared the bill with the likes of Skee Mask, Headless Horseman, Black Asteroid, BMG, Terrence Dixon, The Brvtalist, and Underground Resistance artists like Mark Flash and Esteban Adame. As a producer, his hypnotic and abrasive productions have been released through labels PITS, Junted, Detroit Underground, Ominous Earth, Collapsed Structures and his co-owned label, Apocalypse Rave Culture.
