To A Genius

In this offering by the Berlin-based and made in the Middle East label Disco Halal, we bring you something fresh from Tel Aviv. Following Naduve‘s releases on Rothmans and Cocktail d'Amore, it’s time for him to come back home. This release comes tastefully spread with Saturn Memories (Marius of Coma) special Tahini remix.
We shook hands with one of them. The handshake is thought by some to have originated as a gesture of peace by demonstrating that the hand holds no weapon. This ancient, short ritual took place several times, here, with some limited success. Does this ritual hold any meaning anymore? The race is long, far from being close to it’s end. It’s a race for a handshake.
This record is one of many efforts to make this race be heard. It may sound naive now, or even pathetic, but what are we to do? When cousins meet at family dinners they might fight each other for the chance to raise the cup “The Father’s name”. This battle is soaked with the music of their family, they know each other by its fabric. We wish to take them to the dance floor and play them music to shake hands to.

A1B has been a key player in electronic music since he burst onto the scene in 2012 with his first EP. Since then he’s built an enviable list of supporters including Annie Mac, B Traits, Skream, Dusky, Tensnake, Detroit Swindle and many more, with releases on influential labels such as Gruuv, Dirtybird and Pets Recordings. 

He has taken his diverse sounds around the world, to such clubs as Watergate Berlin, Fabric London and Space Ibiza. Alongside his A1B project, he’s also managed to find time to partner up with Leon Vynehall to release music under the name Laszlo Dancehall, a project that has garnered serious support and underlined A1B’s status as one of the UK’s most exciting young house music producers.

2016 is the year that A1B puts serious focus on his sound and the direction of his music productions. The release of his new ‘Part 1’ EP, also signifies the launch of his new label, A1B Records. The EP, available digitally from 15th August, is a statement of intent, 4 tracks of sample-driven house, crafted for the dancefloor and a limited vinyl mailout has seen it already secure solid support from the likes of B.Traits (BBC Radio 1), Dusky (BBC Radio 1) George Fitzgerald (BBC Radio 1), Catz ’n’ Dogz,  Jimpster, Ryan Elliot, Huxley, The Black Madonna, Joris Voorn and many more.

A1B comments on his current focus and what the future holds for his music and his label, "Over the years i've released many different styles under the house bracket and only within the last few years felt more comfortable with my productions. The abbreviation of my name is just to give my music releases a bit of clarity. This release and future releases on the label will mainly focus on sample driven house music with a nostalgic nod to my main influences over the years."

Releasing my debut album has been one of my most meaningful life-experiences, and apart from the times playing my livesets, I seem to never have found a right moment to share it personally with the world. Today it has been exactly one year since the release-date, so this should be a good moment.

"Kindred Phenomena marks Mattheis' debut album. After two cosmic EPs on Nous'klaer and a mini-album on tape for Ecstatic Recordings, he now returns to Nous'klaer for his first full story. Experienced Dutch producer Tom Ruijg rightly won praise for his first 12” as Tracey, Skyfall, which surfaced on Voyage Direct in early 2017. Combining elements seemingly inspired by vintage Detroit futurism, ‘90s ambient techno and his own love of colourful synthesizer melodies, the EP saw Tracey set out his stall in impressive fashion.

Here he returns to action with his most expansive outing yet, a four-track excursion that does a good job in not only showcasing the depth and variety of his influences, but also Ruijg’s ability to turn his hand to a variety of dancefloor-focused styles whilst retaining a colourful vibe all of his own.

Compare and contrast, for example, the two A-side cuts. While “Testarossa” is far-sighted and spacey, with Tracey wrapping intergalactic electronics and lilting synthesizer melodies around a darting synthesizer bassline and swinging, electro-influenced house drums, “Sidekick” is blissful and almost overwhelmingly melodious: all 16-bit new age motifs, head-in-the-clouds electronics and driving, locked-in machine drums.

The contrasts continue on the B-side, too. Many DJs may instinctively be drawn towards “Made My Love”, whose energy-packed groove (think vintage Chicago jack with a dollop of slick NYC house soul) is peppered with spacey chords, undulating electronic motifs and glacial melodies. Yet the track that follows, the wild and windy electro workout that is “Interceptor”, is every bit as potent when played over club sound systems. The track’s inherent hustle, seemingly the product of Ruijg’s darting synth stabs and feverish audio textures, is almost impossible to resist.
