The guest mix in the second hour is by Joonmack, a DJ / Producer from Melbourne, Australia. He is also Co-Director of Proxima Frequencies and resident DJ for Sooki Saturdays at Sooki Lounge in Melbourne. With an obsession for production quality, Joonmack’s sound is described as psychedelic techno. His mix features tracks (including his own) from the upcoming Frisson Records Various Artists LP “Ozmosis” compiled by Tomchilla and to be released in November 2021.

He’s been a DJ / Producer since the 90's and has played many different styles under aliases such as Kernzy & Klemenza, Bossgroove & Padraig Ballyer. Now his focus is on Techno and he’s wasting no time serving up his own blend behind the decks and with the Dublin based Ceol Crua record label, which he runs and it’s on its 3rd release with support of artists like Leftfield, Perc, Marcel Dettmann, DAVE the Drummer, Chris Liberator, Slam & Dax J.

The guest mix in the second hour is by  Barbuto, a DJ, Producer and Label Head of Mavic Music and he’s based in Sydney, Australia. Originally from Austin, Texas he’s known for his explosive DJ sets and turntable-style trickery. He’s performed at events across North and Central America, Australia, New Zealand, Holland, Germany, and Malta. His tracks have been released on Codex, Tronic, Octopus, Unity, Set About and many others, with 19 top 100 techno chart singles. His mix consists of Mavic Music releases including all five tracks from the forthcoming VA album Impressions Vol 3, which includes my next release, ‘Rave Chant’.

BBQ Trax July 2025

This one has taken a week to put up, for various reasons. Firstly, my usual Saturday night to DJ live happened to fall on my birthday, and secondly, I've been very sad about the passing of someone who was instrumental in my being here and doing this.

Birthdays have always been hard for me, my mother sent me to summer camp, from when I was 5 until 14, and most summers I spent my birthday away from family and fiends and with relative strangers. The last summer I was way, we were on a 7 day trip when my birthday landed, at T Falls - where the Muskoka River meets the Gibson River. I remember getting up early, and sitting on a rock by the Gibson and quietly weeping. This year, I went back to the sad little boy and told him a story and a secret. This brought back a lot of memories I'm still processing. 

I am dedicating this set to the iconic and wonderful Mitch Alexander who recently passed away. He ran the first DJ Pool I was a member of - Release Promo, and for the first 3 years or so it was pretty much only music I got from there that I played. He had a huge influence on me, not just with the artists/labels in his pool, but also his "WhiteLabel" selections, which I would scour each week looking for something neat to add to my set. Thank you so much Mitch, may you rest in peace good soul. 

(Disclaimer: sadly finances forced me to choose to only use one DJ pool a few months ago and I reluctantly left Release Promo).

2025.07.05 Campfire Ghosts

I was mildly triggered the other day, but when I wet to bed, intrusive thoughts kept pushing to the front of my consciousness, eventually I fell asleep. Then I had a dream, highly disturbing, quite vivid, yet odd in certain aspects. I woke up from this dream in the middle of the night, very upset, and could not get back to sleep. I thought about it all day, and in the afternoon a light went off in my head and heart, and I realised the symbolism of the dream. It was literally me banishing my trauma brain. I laughed, then I cried, then I laughed and cried together. I often have powerful emotive dreams, but I have never had some with such powerful symbolism, and with such a clear message and meaning. I have banished with love.

Some really nice tunes in this set, I like the flow, and hope you do too. A couple of old favourite labels making an appearance - Future Avenue and Droid 9, and some new ones too.

What and who is A Darker Wave?
We are a duo (jacki-e & p-mac) who present A Darker Wave every week only on NLive Radio, Circl8 Radio, Echo Radio & Chill Lover Radio. We put the show together in our home studio. The show is streamed worldwide on the internet. Each show is posted on our Soundcloud, Mixcloud, Hearthis.at, Podbean and You Tube pages once it has been streamed and presents the best in new techno releases.
We also play gigs as A Darker Wave and we have played at events in Germany and all over the UK.
The music we play is techno, tech house, deep house and anything else we like enough to include in the show.
Each show is 2 hours long. In the first hour we go into the mix with our featured EP of the week and the best of the new releases.
In the second hour we invite new and upcoming DJs to come onto the show and do a guest mix.

Dark Wave was first used in the 1980s to describe a dark and melancholy variant of new wave and post-punk music and was first applied to UK musicians such as Bauhaus, Joy Division, Sisters of Mercy, Cocteau Twins, The Cure, Siouxsie and the Banshees, Depeche Mode and Anne Clark. It was also used to describe artists who combined music with performance art, such as Throbbing Gristle and Cabaret Voltaire, who challenged and explored the darker and obsessive sides of the human condition.

A lot of techno takes its spirit and ethos from this music, Listen to Throbbing Gristle or Cabaret Voltaire and you can hear the industrial sounds which are a staple of techno music today.

Techno is the outsider of electronic dance music, the punk of today's modern music scene. As Dave Clarke said in an interview with Mixmag, " Techno is edgy. Techno will challenge you......it's the real dark art."

Our radio show, in presenting the best in underground techno and deep house music, and in giving an opportunity for new, up and coming DJ's and producers, is providing an outlet for new techno, which is best described as being the new wave of modern dance music.

Not just a new wave, but with it's incessant bass rumblings, synthesiser drones, pounding drums, melodic top notes and eerie, distorted vocal samples, techno, in all its forms, is a backdrop to and a critique of our post-industrial, consumerist society, one in which our actions are observed 24/7, our democratic freedoms are threatened by our very own governments and our rights to do, think and act as we please are under ever increasing scrutiny. Techno really is A Darker Wave.

When we were listening to music in the 60’s and 70’s, before the electronic tentacles of technology infiltrated the world, we often thought, whilst listening to the likes of Led Zeppelin, Pink Floyd, King Crimson, Frank Zappa, Hawkwind, Captain Beefhart, New York Dolls and Roxy Music, where would music go to in the future? It could never be what was being portrayed in the science fiction movies of the time. Now we know. It can be anything. When we have a recording studio in our own home which is more powerful and versatile than anything available back then, we now know music can be anything and go anywhere. It is only the spark of our imaginations, or lack of it, that holds us back. On our laptop computers we have the capabilities that many artists back then would have given their right arms for. It’s for the uniqueness of the artist to express themselves to be able to stand out from the deluge of music available. Finding those gems is the modern day equivalent of crate digging and when you do, it makes it all worthwhile. Long live music!!!!
