The guest mix in thee second hour is by Jolly Joker, a DJ / Producer from Italy who is now based in Miami, Florida. He started releasing his own tracks in 2011 and at that time was producing and DJ-ing trance. He also presented his own trance radio show, “Mental Therapy” for many years. More recently he’s been uploading a new techno podcast, “Jolly Joker Presents - Live Abstract” to his Soundcloud page every two weeks and it’s techno he’s doing for us..

Time is elusive. It proceeds swiftly in a straight line, always forward and without waiting for us. Being on this continuous and unstoppable path, leads us to ask ourselves many questions about the present and the future. But as far as we go forward, everything, meant as what shapes all things, is also a cyclical trajectory. It returns, never the same as before but always ready to come back to itself. Just as the hands of the clock move swirling towards their origin and then overtake it again and go beyond it countless times. Life too proceeds inexorably forward and in a circle, retracing each step and acquiring new form.
After all, you just wanna moving clockwise.

The guest mix in thee second hour is by Tolee, a DJ/ Producer from Berlin. He’s been producing dub & electronica since the late 90’s when his debut album “Tol. Trap” was released. Since 2020 he’s focused more on techno, using uptempo, progressive psytech beats & dark synth stabs in his productions. His most recent EP, “Join Me” was released in July 2022. He’s also a keen live performer, DJ-ing at various events and venues over the years. The mix he’s done for us consists entirely of his own tracks, most of which haven’t been released yet.

I discovered Vera through her radio shows and podcasts always containing little gems. So I'm glad today that she participates in the reopening of this podcast with a techno set containing tracks of Norbak, Tensal, Translate, CJ Bolland, James Ruskin and many more. Enjoy!

ona:v is a Polish-born DJ, producer and promoter with an ear for groovy dark techno and emotive electro. A scientist by day and a DJ by night, the Edinburgh-based artist is an integral figure in her locale. Founder of the female and non-binary collective EPiKA, she curates a bi-monthly party called CiRCLE, where she books female and non-binary names from the harder side of techno and electro. In 2021/22, she streamed from Berlin’s HÖR Radio. In addition to her residency and internal work at Sisu, she garners three radio residencies on Fnoob, EHFM and Threads. Labels including Pollination UK, Let’s Techno and Paradise Palms Records have released her driving productions, with an upcoming debut EP on Diffuse Reality.

He’s been a DJ / Producer since the 90's and has played many different styles under aliases such as Kernzy & Klemenza, Bossgroove & Padraig Ballyer. Now his focus is on Techno and he’s wasting no time serving up his own blend behind the decks and with the Dublin based Ceol Crua record label, which he runs and it’s on its 3rd release with support of artists like Leftfield, Perc, Marcel Dettmann, DAVE the Drummer, Chris Liberator, Slam & Dax J.

Originally from Austin, Texas he’s known for his explosive DJ sets and turntable-style trickery. He’s performed at events across North and Central America, Australia, New Zealand, Holland, Germany, and Malta. His tracks have been released on Codex, Tronic, Octopus, Unity, Set About and many others, with 19 top 100 techno chart singles. His mix consists of Mavic Music releases including all five tracks from the forthcoming VA album Impressions Vol 3, which includes my next release, ‘Rave Chant’.

The music we play is techno, tech house, deep house and anything else we like enough to include in the show.
Each show is 2 hours long. In the first hour we go into the mix with our featured EP of the week and the best of the new releases.
In the second hour we invite new and upcoming DJs to come onto the show and do a guest mix.

Why are you called A Darker Wave?
Dark Wave was first used in the 1980s to describe a dark and melancholy variant of new wave and post-punk music and was first applied to UK musicians such as Bauhaus, Joy Division, Sisters of Mercy, Cocteau Twins, The Cure, Siouxsie and the Banshees, Depeche Mode and Anne Clark. It was also used to describe artists who combined music with performance art, such as Throbbing Gristle and Cabaret Voltaire, who challenged and explored the darker and obsessive sides of the human condition.

A lot of techno takes its spirit and ethos from this music, Listen to Throbbing Gristle or Cabaret Voltaire and you can hear the industrial sounds which are a staple of techno music today.

Techno is the outsider of electronic dance music, the punk of today's modern music scene. As Dave Clarke said in an interview with Mixmag, " Techno is edgy. Techno will challenge you......it's the real dark art."

Our radio show, in presenting the best in underground techno and deep house music, and in giving an opportunity for new, up and coming DJ's and producers, is providing an outlet for new techno, which is best described as being the new wave of modern dance music.

Not just a new wave, but with it's incessant bass rumblings, synthesiser drones, pounding drums, melodic top notes and eerie, distorted vocal samples, techno, in all its forms, is a backdrop to and a critique of our post-industrial, consumerist society, one in which our actions are observed 24/7, our democratic freedoms are threatened by our very own governments and our rights to do, think and act as we please are under ever increasing scrutiny. Techno really is A Darker Wave.

When we were listening to music in the 60’s and 70’s, before the electronic tentacles of technology infiltrated the world, we often thought, whilst listening to the likes of Led Zeppelin, Pink Floyd, King Crimson, Frank Zappa, Hawkwind, Captain Beefhart, New York Dolls and Roxy Music, where would music go to in the future? It could never be what was being portrayed in the science fiction movies of the time. Now we know. It can be anything. When we have a recording studio in our own home which is more powerful and versatile than anything available back then, we now know music can be anything and go anywhere. It is only the spark of our imaginations, or lack of it, that holds us back. On our laptop computers we have the capabilities that many artists back then would have given their right arms for. It’s for the uniqueness of the artist to express themselves to be able to stand out from the deluge of music available. Finding those gems is the modern day equivalent of crate digging and when you do, it makes it all worthwhile. Long live music!!!!
