that are not pure of heart, and warming the soul in the
embers left behind. Through loss and renewal, we may
realize that the fear of our possessions no longer being
within grasp is often larger than the fear of not having
them at all.

“Things burn down and then you watch the flowers grow
back out of the cracks,” Michal reflected in an interview
with BandWagon. “It’s about watching things burn, but
realizing that they’re just things,” he said. “And realizing
that the pain of losing them actually creates space.”

“healing” begins to open up from the haze that “fog” leaves. The title has a lot of meaning behind this one, laced with distant vocals telling you to “let the healing into your heart”. The track encapsulates the title of the EP, an emotional shift towards happiness, peace of mind, hope, and (some) clarity. This track was written with a lot of personal hardships on CD’s mind from a recent relationship, and always pictured being entranced by it at the end of a long set in the club.

Embarking on a journey of the senses, Easyjack delivers his most fibrous music to date through Hybrid Cluster Vol. 1. Sauntering across a range of tempos and degrees of intensity, this EP channels a uniform atmosphere through its composition and laser precision synthesis. Easyjack’s grounding in the art and science of high integrity engineering shines throughout the entire release, resulting in crystal clear transients and silky stereo imaging.

Hybrid Cluster Vol. 1 spins itself on a sound design axis; each track twists a bevy of similar tones and textures into an entirely new soundscape. The opening track “Iridescence” ebbs and flows between sultry melodies and enveloping bass weight, while the follow up tune “Skirmish” pounds speaker cones with syncopated synth cuts and processed hip-hop rhythms. “Hybrid” is the dance-floor-ready weapon of choice, drenching break-beat in resonant frequencies and juggled sub jaunts. “Azimuth” relaxes the atmosphere, utilizing a suite of round-edged textures and soft, tonal synthesis to paint melodies across the frequency spectrum. The swells and audio artifacts of “Temporal Symmetry” fold into themselves like a torus, giving the track a distinct rhythmic surface to reflect the developing melodies. Bringing the journey to a close, “Parallax Dub” is an all-encompassing stereo ball of synthesis and modality, with complimentary phrases slinging off of one another with mounting momentum. 

Easyjack is perpetually tapped into the vein of high fidelity production and engineering, and he proves it once again through this Hybrid Cluster. His focus on tonal clarity as the foundation of his music speaks volumes, literally and figuratively. A circadian rhythm is a day in the life of all earthlings, the predictable fluctuations of our physical, behavioral and/or mental states over the course of a roughly 24-hour period as influenced by sunlight and temperature. With this concept as the title of JPOD's second full-length, one can see the clear yin-yang to this album, all of the acoustic instrumentation blending in so organically with digital sound craft that the seams are practically invisible, swirls of black and white in balance.

"To the Light" takes you up, with its emotive vocal lines and strummed guitars effervescently supporting a slick downtempo beat, gliding directly into "Midnight Oil," with its fat brass, echoed piano, and staccato vocal snippets lending it a touch of darkness. Later on, tracks like "Moonlit" and "Till Dawn" also seem to interpret the album title, but the theme isn't so rigidly literal as it is interpretively implied. Circadian Rhythms is not an album drowning in messages so much as it creates a feeling, a sense of rounding into form and being in the pocket, of hitting one's proverbial peak and aging gracefully.

JPOD's debut full-length Halfsteppin strutted out confidently in 2012, but a lot of life has been lived since then. In many ways, he is the same old beat chef we always knew, a staple at Bass Coast and Shambhala, frequent collaborator with Stickybuds as the StickyPod Connection, and ace producer of the tastiest womp gland-tickling bass music. Yet, he has clearly matured, both as a producer and as a young parent. Circadian Rhythms continues the trajectory outlined on his Taking a Deep Breath EP from 2014, a move towards more sophisticated song-writing and polished production, incorporating his worldly backpacker influences and peak time main stage aesthetic into a style that reflects the total sum of his age and experience. As such, his sophomore album pulses with a fatherly feeling of deep caring and quiet strength.

From his turntablist origins to his mastery of Ableton, the progress charted in the seven years between albums is obvious. Where he was once consistently over-the-top in quirky glitch-hop funk, JPOD now demonstrates unimaginable depth in stunning subtlety, with fifteen mid-tempo jams that feel lovingly nurtured rather than slightly imposed. Make no mistake, he still brings the party, but he hits you in the feels too, delivering as much in the way of mood-drenched meditations for headphones as rib rumblers for the twilight hours. Although that Spoonbill-esque good natured, trip tweaked, mutant funktronica freak fest style is still apparent on "Right Now," Circadian Rhythms generally relaxes into a warm vibe that is all JPOD's own.

Suffice to say, there ain't no halfsteppin' on this album. Circadian Rhythms is a long, confident stride towards ultimate perfection. Enjoy the trip!

Hacksaw is backsaw! It's been a while since we were last treated to a mini-collection of Jnr Hacksaw treats sourced from the electro-breakbeat glitch mines. After hitting us with the circuit bent bass glee of Silicon Valley EP in 2013, he pretty much dropped off the map. Apparently, he spent several years coding, creating a performance sequencer that allows him to improvise sophisticated, micro-edited music without so much as a save function on which to rely. With this in mind, the 28-minute-long Untied release delivers four fresh takes on the form, tracks that sound so fresh you'd think they were being improvised for you as you hear them.

The opening "Thirteen Ten" is funkier than a sideways Spoonbill, tapping a new vein of glitchjazztronica with its angular, off-kilter percussion creating the base for a mid-range synth lead jam somewhere between Miles Davis and Aphex Twin. "Dirty Process" keeps the tempo down to focus on its cybernetic atmosphere, sounds diced and reduced to buzzing fragments that pan around your headphones like freaky flies while pulsing beats tumble around the lower frequencies. "Vanillier" comes on hauntingly with vocals distorted beyond recognition, giving way to the kind of Tipper-esque funky breakbeat and rippling synth warbles tweaking an isolated melody that should land it on a main stage somewhere. "Eighteenf" rounds out with a return to head-wobbling downtempo, reforging the jazzy elements of "Thirteen Ten" into even trippier hops.

Throughout Untied, Jnr Hacksaw sounds truly and deeply inspired, which in turn ignites the passions and possibilities within all of our minds. Outside of headphones, where the listening experience is practically ecstatic, this is one release to take to a quirky chill stage or to score a dark technoir film set in an alternate '80s universe or whatever such instance you imagine. Free your sequencer and your mind will follow.
