The technical prowess of California's Lindsey Green continues to evolve on his latest EP, and fifth release under the name Audiovoid for Addictech Records. Outer Dub EP presents four smooth, distinctive takes on mid-tempo bass music, drawing on Green's expansive aesthetic that absorbs everything from techno and psy-trance to dubstep and IDM in its quest for music that achieves both home listening satisfaction and dance floor domination.

Opening the EP on a bold note, "Tourettes" twists profane vocals, percussive clicks and zooming race car synths around a gnarly, warping bass line. While its resting glitch-hop tempo is it's main swagger, the peak of the track hints at glitchbass house as Green lets the beat unfold at select times into a brisk 4/4, and the layers of madness fall in place around it. 

"Reese Winter Poon" is a similar cross-genre hybrid. Its peppy organic break hints at drum and bass, with Green teasing its resting 80bpm into the appropriate double-speed tempo at key points. Rather than pushing through into an all-out assault, he steps back to unleash lumbering bass bombs at the drops, keeping the mania ever elusive. The tension created between its jungle and glitch-hop leanings could have come off disorienting or unresolved in lesser hands, but Green keeps the track feeling as playful as its name. With DnB on the rise again, this is the perfect tool to hold together stylistically wide-reaching mixes.

Changing gears after the first two tracks, "Twilight Lurkers" has a pensive, vaguely remorseful vibe, largely due to its processed vocals, bit crushed and pitch shifted, sounding somewhere between exhalations of joy or emotional turmoil. The meat of the track is a clean, propulsive breakbeat, like vintage Botchit & Scarper.

"Outer Dub Source" follows the contemplative "Twilight Lurkers" with a more thoughtful, low-key downtempo track, but takes it to a trippier sci-fi realm care of its techy synths and NASA-esque vocal samples. Initially, the track has a bubbly texture, with moaning, liquid bass and sparse pads. After the drop, reinvigorated bass starts drawing long lines across the piece, an elongated melody that helps foster its sense of space, while the vocals become more prominent in the evolving atmosphere, and, later, a slowly arpeggiated lead creeps up to echo around it. It's a satisfying conclusion to another brilliantly diasporic Audiovoid EP.

For nearly a decade, Tycho has been known as the musical alias of Scott Hansen, but with the release of Awake – his second LP for Ghostly International – the solo project has evolved into a three-piece band. Relating closer to post-rock than ambient soundscapes, the record is situated in the present, sounding more like Hansen than drawing from his influences. “This is, in many ways, the first true Tycho record.”

Following 2011’s Dive LP, the San Francisco-based designer toured extensively, and with a full band on stage, his sound coalesced into a percussive, organic whole. Zac Brown (guitars, bass) rejoined Scott on the road for this tour, but it was the particular addition of Rory O’Connor’s live drumming that ultimately sent Hansen back to the studio with a more precise vision. “After the tour, I decided that I wanted to capture the more energetic, driven sound of the live show on the next album,” Hansen recalls. Bringing musicians into Tycho’s creative process was a step towards expanding his own songwriting and advancing the project beyond its current sound.

In a cabin near Tahoe last winter, Zac and Scott began fleshing out the structure of the new record, but it wasn’t until they set up shop in the hills of Santa Cruz with Rory that it all fell into place. “It crystallized the vision of how the drums would come to the forefront on this record,” says Hansen. The sound was much more stripped-down and concise with more organic instruments in the fold. Songs like “Montana” and “Awake” are a departure from Tycho’s previous material – unique to the group effort poured into the songs on the new record – while “See” and “Dye” echo ideas from previous works, bridging a middle ground between the old and new. Working with Count Eldridge, who also engineered Dive, the team could fixate on the pulses that Tycho might previously layer under synthesizers and exhume them with distinct bass and guitar patterns.

Also known for his design work as ISO50, Hansen’s visual and sonic efforts have dovetailed throughout the course of his career. “This is the first time in my life I've dropped everything to focus on one artistic pursuit,” notes Hansen. Previous Tycho releases came to fruition when an amalgam of songs were nearing completion, but Awake is where music becomes the focus and true expression becomes the result.

New Zealand's Harry Bretherton, known in the realm of electronic music as Organikismness, has been around the block. And not just once; the artist has been building an almost encyclopedic catalog of tunes for almost a decade. Organikismness isn’t afraid to experiment - he’s conquered a massive range of tempos and has proven time and time again his prowess in composing both original music and stellar remixes. Drum & Bass and Dubstep were clearly very influential to his palate of the deep, dark, and mysterious, and now he’s returned as ISM with 7 symphonic selections entitled “Electric Dread LP.”

The concept of the aptly named LP represents the seamless interconnectivity of electronic music and dub/reggae vibes and culture. The first four tracks of the project are Dubstep - strictly that deep 140 that instantly puts you in a dark room, slithering on cold concrete. The opening track, “Electric Dread (Naza Vibes)” begins with a quote from an insightful Jamaican man, and sets the tone for the dubbed out, eerie album. Then the bombastic bass and wonky rhythmic percussion creeps on in and the mean mug comes out to play. “Badoozy”’s off-kilter wobble will have you sittin’ sideways, while “Babylon”’s ethereal synth work and spooky vocal samples in the beginning predict a slightly different outcome - we’re treated to an aggressively soothing bassline and the crisp clicks of ISM’s complex drum patterns. The latter half of the album is a journey through Drum & Bass. The refrain of the percussion in “Mercy” pairs excellently with ISM’s voluminously viscous vibrations, and the closing track, “Dreadnaughtus” is a glitch-ridden half-time banger that knocks the cerebellum with furious fervor. 

“Electric Dread,” in the end, is a spectacular showcase of Organikismness’ boisterous bass bombs, and a solid testament to his competence and mastery of dancefloor bass music production. Equally appropriate in a dark bedroom or in a dimly-lit club, this shit will make you gyrate your pelvis, sway your hips and do the damn thing.
