Artist Bio

Mo Maria Sarkis is a Lebanese contemporary visual artist whose multidisciplinary practice spans painting, installation, video, photography, sound, and text. Rooted in critical theory and a continuous curiosity for the human and artificial mind, her research draws on thinkers ranging from Michel Foucault and Derrida to Ray Kurzweil, Michio Kaku, and Donna Haraway. Her practice explores how coded languages, technological systems, and hybrid forms reshape perception, communication, and the spaces we inhabit.



Influenced by movements like surrealism and Dada, Sarkis creates poetic yet critical works that invite audiences to decode shifting meanings and sense connections across different systems. Her pieces combine fragments of poetry, radio signals, and translation across languages to evoke states of flux, repetition, and liminality — examining how patterns in nature, biological networks, human activity, and machines intersect and echo each other. Rather than offering fixed answers, her practice remains open-ended, encouraging viewers to reflect on the layers of these interwoven systems.



Her recent works, including Hypnopompia and Complex, Fluxes2, demonstrate this approach by merging video, sound, Morse code, and public interventions to question how meaning mutates across languages, technologies, and urban spaces. Sarkis has participated in international residencies and research-based programs such as La Générale en Manufacture in Paris and Ashkal Alwan’s Home Workspace Program in Beirut. Her work has been shown in Poetry Expo (Versopolis, 2023–2025), Mundial Poético de Montevideo in Uruguay — where she was the first Lebanese artist to participate — the Batroun Art Festival in Lebanon, the TASHWEESH feminist art program in Cairo, and group shows in Italy including LIMITS and VetteVertici – Mountains and Human Rights at Laure Keyrouz Arts Gallery.



Through her layered, research-driven practice, Sarkis continues to develop a distinctive body of work that engages with the complexities of language, technological mediation, and the hidden intersections between human, machine, and natural systems.
