Helena Hauff et Umwelt se connaissent bien. La hambourgeoise est en effet l’une des signatures du label Rave or Die dont le fondateur n’est autre que…  Umwelt. Il faut dire que les deux producteurs ont tout pour s’entendre. Ils partagent en effet un goût prononcé pour une techno brute, sombre et glaciale.

Autre point commun, Helena Hauff et Umwelt sont chacun à la tête d’un ou plusieurs labels : Return to Disorder pour elle, New Flesh, Shelter, Fundata et donc Rave or Die pour lui. Une manière pour ces deux jusqu’au-boutistes d’éviter les concessions, d’évoluer au rythme de leurs envies dans les méandres de l’underground. Entre noirceur et complicité, ce versus franco-allemand s’annonce donc sous les meilleurs auspices !

Helena Hauff vs Umwelt @ Nuits Sonores 2017 (2017.05.26 - Lyon, France)

As highlighted by us in September last year, then Romanians have unwittingly formed a new blend of dance music, blending minimal techno & groove laden deep house, sewn up and exported to some of the clubbing world's hottest cities. Djs Rhadoo, Raresh and many more have helped to define a new sound amongst an overly-familiar genre - including hot export Priku. This Romanian musician and DJ shares a special 2 hour live mix with MEOKO, recorded at Bucharest's Snrs48 party, in turn delivering a live and unedited snapshot of his driving, deep and at times, subtle sound. A dynamic mix - playing with the space between notes and veering into minimal, atmospheric tapestries - Priku's focus on nuances in sound, percussive elements and thick slabs of bass running throughout shall take the MEOKO listener on a far flung, left of centre journey into a lesser known aesthetic. Freerotation Festival (a.k.a. the highlight of every year a.k.a. the four best dancefloors on the planet) was on top form this year – it's always a total joy to play and spend the weekend there and I'm really happy to share the recording of my set. I was playing second-to-last on Sunday night in Room 1, between XDB and Sebastian Mullaert, so I figured I'd leave out the drastic tempo shifts and just have A LOAD OF FUN keeping the party going instead, maybe coaxing out a couple of end-of-festival tears in the process.

If you were there then millions of thanks to you, there's no bunch of people I'd rather play to (or hang out with) and I've spent the last 3 days wishing I could go back. Hope you've managed to get through the last few days without almost weeping at the coffee machine. (I've had no such luck.)

About:
Rumour has it Federico Leocata was uncovered by none other than the alchemist of electro, Gerald Donald. Whether this is idle gossip or gospel truth cannot hide the fact that this Italian machinist has proved his worth with some stunningly sheer cuts on some cracking labels. Now Leocata is lending his clinical skills to Shipwrec with ”Archetypen”. “In Der Nacht” is sculpted with frigid surgical precision. Stark melodies mingle with starker percussion before vocoder lyrics melt with soaring strings. “Von Der Flue” allows a thaw to set in, textured tones arc and bend to a rasping rhythm in this alluring work. Leocata shows another side to his style with the incandescent brightness of “Zeitdilatation.” Aluminium brushed basslines are pricked by fizzing drums in a piece that ties together the two poles of electro and electronica. The darkest piece is left to the end. The sinister and skeletal “Archetypen” trills with haunting harmonies and sinister samples for a chilling finale to an EP that explores four very different avenues of machine music.
