This track features the Japanese musicians Esoh (didgeridoo) and Ema (voice/erhu) from the group Yurai. In March 2018 I met with Esoh and Ema for the first time in over 20 years; we did a lot of music projects back when I lived in Kyoto in the 1990’s. It was so special to meet them after so long and to find the same easy flow through listening and playing together. Deep Space Blue was the opening piece at a concert we gave in Kobe. The deep vibrations of the didgeridoo open to a depth of connection feelings of eternity, in friendship as in time and space ...

In Februay 2018 I travelled to Australia for the first time, where I met a sweet soul, a fellow musical traveller, by the name of Amir Paiss. Amir plays the Persian santur and he was co- founder of the internationally acclaimed Hebrew-Arab world music ensemble SHEVA.
Amir and I played an impromptu evening of music together at a house concert in Byron, then a few days later we decided to meet late at night to make an outdoor recording, taking advantage of the balmy, warm evening. We set up some mics in Amir’s beautiful hillside garden under a starry sky. There was no audience - just the moon, the stillness of the trees and the sounds of the night ...the chirupping of the insects in the background adding another dimension as they seem to be weave into the music. We played deep into the night, and from those recordings come these two tracks River of Stars and Isra, which is a Sufi term for the supersensible and dimensional travel by night.

hari, amo-te

A lone Nightingale singing his heart out to the night, accompanied by a Shakuhachi Flute and a Shruti Box.

In May I had the privilege of taking part once again in the Singing with Nightingale' series with Sam Lee. This time in the deep of the night in Highnam Woods, Gloucestershire. Only the sound of my Shakuhachi with Sam's shruti box and a lone nightingale singing his heart out to the night ... I had an extraordinary experience - the more I played with the song of this enchanting bird, the more time seemed to slow down, and the melodic phrases seemed to reveal their inner intricacy in a way that felt like an initiation into the inner kingdom of the nightingale, and then, through him and his song, as a portal into the inner world of nature herself and the very fabric of life. It was an almost shamanic feeling of penetrating the veil of existence, the dimension of melody as metaphor for something beyond sound, in the world of spirit ... and so much information coming through in the silences between the notes ... a truly mystical experience.

Binaural beats are a way of synchronizing your brain waves (which are measured in hertz) with the hertz of the binaural beat. The brain has a frequency following response which causes this to occur. These can help induce states of relaxation, meditation and help to relieve anxiety and stressed out states. This works best with headphones because binaural beats are panned hard left and right which forces the brain to synchronize the two tones. The tone is C#, 68.05hz.
