It’s that time again, finally time for a new Adventures of Soul Clap Podcast! This episode comes from an old friend, the first person to ever book us in Amsterdam in fact (and at the legendary Trouw no less), DJ Melon. But before we ever even met, we were playing his dancefloor groovin’ Je Dàvu edits like I Need You Tonight and Music Got You Movin’ at our gigs all over Boston and soon the world.

Melon sure is one funky Dutchman, and his DJ sets take you on a ride through some serious booty moving funk, disco and house. So when he offered up these two awesome edits for Soul Clap Records we jumped at the chance and dropped them last month. Now we’re following it up with this beautiful mix for snowy winter mornings or sandy summer summer afternoons. Basically, whatever hemisphere you’re in, or whatever mood, Melon will make you feel better, and that’s why we love him!

Vinyl collector, DJ and producer Hun Choi (aka Hunee) is the rarest of artists.

Choi’s sets straddle genres without sounding like a forced education, showing both his wide array of knowledge and his deep understanding of the dancefloor. A Berlin resident for many years, Choi recently upped sticks and moved out to Amsterdam, so it seemed almost inevitable that he’d end up working with the city’s stories Rush Hour imprint.

The label released Hunee’s debut album Hunch Music earlier this year, and it highlighted just how versatile Choi is as a producer. Giving requisite nods to Detroit and Chicago, Choi tracks through house and techno’s cinematic side with a unique lightness, bringing his expertise and pacing as a DJ to his productions with ease.

That same expertise can be heard throughout Hunee’s FACT mix. There’s nothing showoffy here, rather Choi has hand-picked a selection of summery deep cuts from his extensive catalogue of rarities, blending fuzzy soul, melancholy disco, hypnotic Kosmische music and plenty more to emerge with a mix that practically demands the clouds to part.

Hunee will be performing at Farr Festival this summer – 16-18 July to be precise – so if you’re in the Hertfordshire area, make sure you head over to the Farr site to investigate the expansive lineup and snag tickets.

Manchester's Rainy City Music returns with it's first vinyl release after seven years and it's NOW AVAILABLE ON 12" !  Although the label which started in 96 has continued with digital only releases during this break it now returns with a brand new 12" single by DELE SOSIMI AFROBEAT ORCHESTRA' Too Much Information'. Dele the ex-keyboard player and arranger of Egypt 80, the group led by African music legend Fela Kuti gets the remix treatment by Berlin based Afro electronic artist MR RAOUL K and New York's Haitian artist JEPHTÉ GUILLAUME. Both remix artists are hugely respected in their respective underground scenes. 

Jephte's mix provides the calm yet subtle New York warmth. Think of Body & Soul on a sunday afternoon and a spiritual experience.

The Raoul K Transformation mix is simply a very cool yet huge peak time afro-electronic groove and has that natural crossover appeal.

Dele Sosimi Afrobeat Orchestra - Too Much Information ( remixes )

As co-founder of the Music From Memory label, UK born but Berlin based Jamie Tiller has encouraged us all to take time out, go slow and get lost in some essential Balearic, neo-classical and minimalist works by legends old and new. As well as working with celebrated Italian composer Gigi Masin, the label has put out the work of ambient super group Gaussian Curve and Joan Biblioni amongst others. The next project for these obscure gem lovers is a timely re-issue of UK band The System and as such Tiller and co are doing fine work as historical treasure hunters. 

Jamie —also part of the Red Light Records team— DJs all round Europe and as such has put together a mix for our series that shows where he is at. It proves him to be a lover of colourful and harmonious melody, of beachy guitar licks and sun kissed sounds that bounce along on a buoyant groove. Flashes of 80s sass, pumping euro disco and slick, classic sounding house are all part of the most pleasing puzzle.

All The World Loves Lovers (Mix Jan. 2010)

A real pleasure to have a couple of our favourite selectors on the series this week. Kev Macey and Joe Lye make up London's esoteric party collective Amp + Deck. Although its taken them two years to compile this mix for us, it's been worth the wait. Regulars at discerning festivals, Ibizan villas and heaving basements alike, an Amp + Deck mix is always a highlight. Each time we've caught them play their sets are always executed with style and excellent programming, full of obscure and exotic but deeply danceable records. Here they take us on a thrilling Afro themed disco journey.

Another Sleepless Night

Katie Barber has a long and varied history as a DJ and promoter, one that sees her firmly established as highly in demand not just in London and the UK but throughout the globe.  Katie caught the DJ bug back in the early 90s but things really kicked off for her at the tail end of the decade with residencies for the Dorado record label and Patrick Forge and Phil Asher’s highly influential Inspiration Information nights at the Notting Hill Arts Club. Since then she’s performed and held down residencies at a myriad of festivals including Glastonbury, The Big Chill and Croatia’s Garden Festival , clubs such as The End, Fabric and Plastic People and famed nights like Need 2 Soul, Faith and Co-Op. She’s played alongside a roll call of some of the world’s finest DJs including Kerri Chandler, DJ Deep, Jerome Sydenham, King Britt, DJ Spinna, Karizma, Norman Jay & the Idjut Boys to name just a few.

On top of all this Katie still finds time to be a founder member of the all-girl DJ collective Ladyz, formerly Ladybugz, as well as running her own nights, Adventures In Paradise and TBC, and can often be found hosting radio shows for Ministry of Sound and Rinse FM. Equally at home playing to 1000 plus people at the Montreaux Jazz Festival as she is in an intimate party with friends, Katie is a true mistress of her craft. With an encyclopaedic knowledge rooted deep in the core of dance music Katie is an asset to any party anywhere you may find her.
