A Degree Of Guilt - Aedes Aegypti

Recorded on a Sony PCM-D50, 96kHz/24bit on June 26, 2015. 

This soundscape features the Grey Catbird singing it's seemingly never-ending song. There are at least two Catbirds that can be heard vocalizing, calling over one another. The Catbird singing in the foreground can be heard best in the left channel, while the other is heard best in the right. As a member of the Mimidae family, Grey Catbirds are known for their improvisation and self-taught song. At 2:46, a Yellow-billed Cuckoo can be heard for a brief moment. Other bird species present in this mid-morning recording are the Eastern Towhee, Field Sparrow and Indigo Bunting.

Dry – Aedes Aegypti

Earth is warming at an alarming rate, due to the increased levels of Carbon Dioxide (CO2)that we are spewing into the atmosphere. This piece is a sonification of what is known as the Keeling Curve (named after scientist Charles David Keeling), which represents the average amount of carbon dioxide in parts per million that is in the atmosphere.

The melody shows us that as the years go on (starting in 1958), the collection of Carbon Dioxide increases at an exponential rate, giving the listener a feeling of unease and anticipation of the melodies end. But as we know now, this is only the beginning. As human industry continues to spread across all facets of the globe, Earth will only get warmer and more inhospitable. Lest we curb our addiction to fossil fuels and elect governors who are willing to do something to prevent furthering our impact in the atmosphere, the melody will only continue to become unlistenable, so to speak.

Aedes Aegypti is set to release his debut studio album entitled Umani this spring.  This project is part of an ongoing process, which is driven by the creation of sonic and visual art - a multimedia experience - to understand our relationship to the environment, the cosmos, and the universe of which we are most positively connected.

Umani is the first collection of thoughts, instrumentals, dances, and soundscapes that purposefully engage the relationship between human society at large and the environment in which humans behave and interact with the material world around them.  The album in its entirety serves this function by subjectively conveying personal thoughts and emotions in order to critically engage the things we do as an entire population of human animals (Homo sapiens).

Umani is set to release in mid-May 2013.  It was successfully funded via Kickstarter on April 2nd, and there will be more to come soon enough.
