JustMike
“Dropping unadulterated House since 1997.”

That is how followers would describe JustMike as a DJ. Going on two decades of Djing experience JustMike has done it all—from opening sets to peak hour, from humble venues to large venues—allowing him to graciously move up the ranks as a local prominent House DJ. Most consider him a local legend.

Born and raised in the El Paso / Juarez, MEX area, some of JustMike’s influences derive from the sounds of his home and hometown. Other influences, past and present, include Julius Papp, Fela Kuti, Negrocan, Miguel Miggs and Inaki Santos to name a few. His participation in the scene since 1993 allowed JustMike to be exposed to all sorts of music genres and DJs—allowing for a well-rounded musical and technical development—contributing to the style he plays today. Count on, subtle to blaring horns, infections bass lines, neatly groomed acoustic guitar plucks, flaring vocals all fused with some sensible synthetic riffs. To say the least, his distinct style and his humble down-to-earth demeanor have earned him the pleasure to headline events and DJ abroad.

“…what category would I classify my house under? That’s a hard one. I really don’t classify my style of music anything other than House. I can give some of the elements in my “style” of house: plenty organic instrumentation: horns, vocals, congas, and funk…massive amounts of funk.”

Where possible, the missing music has been rebuilt using discs from the BBC Gramophone Library. This collection comprises fragments from 1960-69.

Started to DJ back in the early 70's. It was a time of underground clubs in New York like the Loft and the Gallery. Where I heard some of the best DJ's. Nicky Sciano was my Favorite . He infected me with the bug of wanting to DJ. I was able to work as a DJ in Portugal, and Spain (Canary Islands) came back home in 79 and started working in some of the Hottest clubs in Rochester New York. I was a musician early on both in latin music and R & B. This helped me I Beleive to undertand the musical settings with Drama and emotion. Constanly shearching for that seemles mix. When I Started I only had Sparta turn tables available. Direct drive turn tables used in Radio. Not at all sutible for Clubs, But yet the technology was not there. Thorn was the only turntable that had pitch control. It was in one of my trips to New York to buy music and party that I heard the DJ at The Hollywood do an incredible over lay that seemed to last for ever. When I Looked into the booth I noticed he was using Thorn turntables with pitch control. That made all the Differance in the world. Today Technology makes it easy. I'm thankful to have had the early exposure and witness the development of the art form of DJing.
