In early 2010, what would eventually become Antique Electronic Synthesizer Greats was simply a concept for a live set. Fluorescent Grey, aka Robbie Martin, cut almost a thousand tiny samples and loops from works dating from 1955 to 1984, limiting his sources to strictly electronic and/or synthesized recordings. His rules allowed for non-synthesized compositions (e.g., Delia Derbyshire's tape cutting based tones) as well as synthesizer audio of any kind, including the Hammond Novachord. And far from simply a stolen sample collage, or meta-mash-up project, Robbie wanted to allow the mix he composed to preserve and highlight the eras' best sounds in a comprehensive backdrop. Some of those painstakingly found and excised snippets may be all but indiscernible to most, while some tease with their familiarity (Depeche Mode bass drum? YMO hi hat?), and some are nakedly in homage (synth lines from Vangelis, Giorgio Moroder). All are as playful as the puzzling track names, one of the most obvious of which are pieces that re-imagine the sound of John Carpenter's best synth-centric movie scores. From the uneasy sounds of horror to the sweet spot of vintage synth-pop and industrial, to the brief satisfyingly bizarre vocal cameos by Alan Vega and a Spanish industrial/noise outfit, it runs the gamut of its chosen time period exhaustively. 

One might wonder, why stop at 1984? or 1983 (the original cutoff)? In all honesty, the cut off year was first altered to make one Zoviet France record eligible. But why is it so important to draw the line in the early 80's when many classic and important electronic albums came out between 1984-1990, Skinny Puppy's Bites or DJ Pierre's Acid Tracks. The answer is simple, until 1984 most music that was 'electronic' relied primarily on synthesizers. Around mid-1983 romplers/samplers become par the course. The techniques sent waves through the electronic music production circles and arguably diluted the powerful earlier sound of acts like Tangerine Dream and Kraftwerk (ie electric cafe). Maybe most notably, the Klaus Schulze album 'Dig it' that proclaims the death of a analog on it's opening track. Additionally the rules were not set yet, before rave culture took hold there was a more playful less specific purpose to it all. Lending itself automatically to a more varied feel. 

Given the uncannily nostalgic or modern moods evoked, it can be all too easy to forget that the entire mix is comprised solely of an endlessly rotating roster of up to 15 isolated loops, all at least a quarter of a century old, some twice that age. On some songs, you could imagine a DJ dialing into the sounds of AFX or Mr. Oizo, an amusing stunt for some of the source material sounds unmistakably dated in a way that has yet to be retrofetishized. Proto-electronica futurism captured in Chris Carter's sequences or Morton Subotnick's Autechre-like FM synth splatters, works that indisputably sound futuristic in their own right. Dated or not, the novelty factor of an overwhelmingly corny synth brass sample is sometimes too good to resist, making it nigh impossible to prevent that old fashioned sound from antiquing the whole mix. 

This pastiche is offered up in both a mix and an individually tracked album for maximum utility. Robi Insinna aka Headman's Relish Recordings continues to forge in the past and brings you a collection of classic tracks reworked for today: Relish EP V including Unknown Cases, Units Dub by Headman, Gina X Red Axes version and Headman's original 2003 Dub.

First up is Headman's version of Masimbabele by The Unknown Cases.
The original track has been performed and recorded 25 years ago and was originally released as a 12" single by RoughTrade. Members were Cologne musicians Helmut Zerlett and Stefan Krachten (disciples and regular collaborators of the CAN musicians) and legendary African percussionist REEBOP KWAKU BAAH and it has actually been mixed at CAN STUDIO in Cologne.

Masimbabele was originally regarded as "a modern form of rhythm'n'blues" in the original 1983 Rough Trade promotion info – since nobody involved had heard anything like that before....no surprise it became one of John Peel's favourite records of the early 80s and one of his most played singles in 1983. it became since an Afrobeat classic! it was also Remixed by Adrian Sherwood in 1989 for RoughTrade.

As second track on the EP is Headman's unreleased High Pressure Days Dub by The Units. In 2009 the Original was release digital and on Vinyl via Relish with a remixes by Rory Phillips and Headman.

The Units were a cornerstone of this unofficial movement, later called “synth punk” and which would come to define a greater west coast DIY culture combining new synthetic sounds, ranging from Nervous Gender, Screamers and Monitor, to The Blackouts. High Pressure Days is a testament to the loneliness and urgency of the times, and one of synthpunkʼs greatest anthems while at the same time becoming a dancefloor classic among djʼs like Danielle Baldelli.

Next up is the Red Axes remix of their all time favorite track No G.D.X. by Gina X. They say it was something very special for them, as the track means a lot to them. Headman's 2003 Dub is the final track on the EP and it was released originally by Hell's Gigolo Records.

Released in autumn 1979, No G.D.M. slowly took hold with disparate audiences worldwide, and remains a classic to this day.
Sometimes the man-machine is a woman... or is it? It's hard to tell in the twilight world of Gina X Performance — the collaboration of singer/lyricist Gina Kikoine and producer/multi-instrumentalist Zeus B. Held—confounded the norms. Their songs blur genders and sexual preferences; rouge covers stubble and women morph into men.

No G.D.M. became a staple of Rusty Egan's playlist at Blitz, the epicentre of London's fashionable nightclub scene. Groundbreaking in its choice of sounds, subject matter and visual presentation, Gina X Performance anticipated the better- known achievements of countless peers: the sleazy electro-noir of Soft Cell; the androgynous stance of Annie Lennox and Grace Jones & Laurie Anderson's marriage of electronic pop with performance art. The entire "electroclash" movement at the turn of the 21st century owed a debt to GXP with Miss Kittin & The Hacker topping the list and it also anticipated the UK synthpop boom of Human League and Depeche Mode by a couple of years...

"It's very direct, danceable club music, anchored stylistically between Electro, Techno and Industrial/NewWave, strongly influenced by '80s acts Liaisons Dangereuses, CH BB, sporadically, DAF and the Consumed /Concept period of Richie Hawtin." is how Hanno Leichtmann describes his new project Gesetz Der Oktaven. "The name 'Gesetz Der Oktaven' was chosen because I wanted something very German sounding, as we say 'sperrig', something technical, scientific. All the track titles are very old skool or obsolete studio/audio terms. "I wanted a completely new set-up, so I got a large Soundtracs desk from the 80s with 16 channels and, crucially 6 Aux Sends for effects." He continues, "The large number of aux sends was essential for the project. I used a drum machine, a MiniMoog sequenced by a TB 303, a vintage Drum Synth and six 6 effect combinations for the delay / reverb tracks. All very old-skool and in real time with no plugins. It took months of trial and error but the result is a very beautiful high-quality vintage studio sound."

An intense introspection of sound deconstructionism and spacial dissonance presented in this 4 track (plus 2 lock grooves) EP entitled Nonharmonic Beautifault. 

The A Side is introduced with the track 'Blank Hand', a sludge fuelled walk into dusty audio bites and asthmatic rhythms, topped with screaming hoovers and TV static that at once builds up, collapses into beautiful cacophony. Leading us into the 'Body Molecule' - A rushing pad and sparkling percussion pinned to a rolling kick pattern that drives this track toward a central point of attacking synths and swarming soundscape. The run out locked groove features a deep distorted kick that loops into infinity. 

The other side starts with 'Angular Beautifault'. Acidic Rhythms and Buzz Saw Synths all washed together into a shimmering reverberated cavern that explodes with high powered clap patterns and bubbling 303 lines. Following this we have 'The Burin' - an uncompromising, high paced assault of power kicks and slanted percussion. Incessantly driving and unyielding towards the final lock groove of distorted sub loop. 

Nonharmonic Beautifault represents a shift in Positive Centre's work that aims beyond the delicate ambience into harder and darker sound territories. 

Nonharmonic Beautifault EP will be released on 12" vinyl and digital on February 19.

Headman/ Robi Insinna has done many remixes over the years aside from his Headman and Manhead projects and running Relish. He always liked reinterpreting classic tracks that inspired him or that he was a fan of. Ranging from the mid 70's to the early 80's, this album features a handful of classics Reworked. Roxy Music hails from an era that started shaping the late 70's avant-garde scene. it turns to Italo Disco classics like Klein M.B.O. and N.O.I.A., essential to the formation and inspiration for bands like New Order. Synth-Punk group The Units with the High Pressure Days Rework through to electronic-afro-funk of The Unknown Cases over to Swiss artist Stephan Eicher from Grauzone fame.

Reworks features tracks that are soft-spots for Robi, and have inspired him to produce his own music. He tries to keep as much of the original as possible, slightly updating and adapting to modern-day dance floors. The essence, intended to be kept alike and preserved.

A rework of Fred Ventura kicks off the album, it’s featured on the limited edition 7” Vinyl, originally produced by the Godfathers of Italo Disco, Turatti and Chieregato over 30 years ago. N.O.I.A.’s hit from the early 80’s is reworked to produce a tune that’s current to todays dance floors. One of John Peel’s favourites of 83’, The Unknown Cases sweeps in – the rework was released on Relish EP V Vinyl in 2014, an afro/cosmic treasure in Robis vinyl collection. Headman’s Dub of The Units follows; Robi first heard this on a Baldelli mix from the early 80’s, since then it’s become one of his favourite tracks. The Units were the corner stone of an unofficial movement, later called “synth punk” and which would come to define a greater west coast DIY culture combining new synthetic sounds. The next Rework is from Klein & M.B.O. “Dirty talk” fame. The anticipators of New Orders early 80’s sound.

RIS Remix dates from 2004, it was a classic Italo Disco hit that inspired and shaped the sound of Headman, Manhead and Relish. Gina X, and her 1979 release No G.D.M. gets a 2016 Headman rework. His first remix was released in 2003 on Gigolo. The second half also features a rework of Grauzone’s Stephan Eicher’s hit Nice. This was a very important rework for Robi, being a Swiss national and a big fan of Grauzone and Stephan Eicher. Swiss all girl punk band Kleenex wrote and performed Nice originally. The next release came out on Roxy Music’s 2006 Roxy
Music Remix project album, Headman’s rework Dub was unreleased to this date, and is also featured on the very limited edition 7”, to be released in conjunction with the album. This mix was done with the most respect for the original sounds and instrumentals; to hear them all separated was exciting and at the same time a challenge. The album closes off with another reworked dub of State of Art, formed in 1981, an Italian New wave band out of Milan and the former Band of Fred Ventura.

On was released 10 years ago. It features the hit single On and ON and Moisture which was licensed for Xavier Dolans acclaimed movie Laurence Anyways. The release comes in a Delux edition and it features all the remixes, Dubs and extra Versions that came out on various formats when it was originally released.

The album was Robi’s second Full featured Album as Headman and it featured many Artists like Stephen Dewaele from Souldwax/2many Djs, Anthony from Radio 4, Mattie Safer from The Rapture and  Tara from It Rough fame and many others. Remixes are by Trevor Jackson’s Playgroup and Mustapha 3000 (Erol Alkan).

The Album contains 11 tracks with influences from new wave, post punk, early house and electronica. The first track on the album features vocals with Anthony Roman from Radio 4. The Band was strongly inspired by the early NY underground and Post-Punk sounds. Track number 2 Roh was with vocals by Stephen Dewaele, the backing track is like a proto-house track with dummachines and synths. Next is On and On with Tara from It Rough fame. So Now! was an instrumental version that was first released together with So Then! on 12“ Vinyl. Robi added vocals himself for Do You Feel. Moisture wich was featured in the coming out scene in Laurnce Anyways Movie is next with Vocals by Luca Santucci. Freedom Drums was another Headman Instrumental. Matties Safer from The Rapture contributed on Balearica and next up is Upstart. Track No 10 is a cover by the NYC underground band Marilyn and the Moviestars which Robi was always a big fan of.The reprise was with vocals by Ed Laliq and the Bonus track came out of an London afternoon session and ended with vocals by Ben Rymer and Erol added some backings too.

The Bonus tracks are Remixes and version that came out on 12“ and other formats.
So Then! was the B side of So Now!. Then comes Rong Hands Dub. Trevor Jackson remixed Roh as Playgroup. One versions with Vocals by Stephen Dewaele and one as a Love Dub. Erol’s Mustapha 3000 version of Moisture is next! Robi Did a Club version which was used in Xavier Dolans movie and he also did a Dub of Moisture. The last Bonus versions are edits and the last track is Deah that was only released on Vinyl and on a very limited edit 12“ on Relish.
