Exclusively for you today, we are pleased to premiere the Rebecca Vasmant Vibration Mix of “Anansi” by Bristol six-piece Dundundun, a sublime melting pot of celestial jazz, Afro Latin rhythms, electronic grooves and uplifting vocals.

Vasmant’s remix is taken from Dundundun’s debut self-titled EP, forthcoming on Worm Discs, the label-arm of lynchpin Bristol promoters & Glastonbury curators Worm Disco Club. An equal love of African and Latin rhythms, alongside jazz and electronic music is evident across the EP’s original tracks, “Anansi” and the synth-bass-meets-Afrobeat Sun Ra version, “Dun In Outer Space”, released earlier this year.

Dundundun’s members have played with the likes of The Heavy, Alice Russell, Pete Josef, DJ Die and Dele Sosimi, providing ample experience across genres, ancient to future, to create adventurous new shapes full of thunderous bass, crowd-calling beats, electric synths and dirty horn riffs.

Renowned Glaswegian selector and Worldwide FM resident Rebecca Vasmant puts a cosmic and soulful spin on “Anansi”, inviting award winning vocalist, kitti, AKU’s Harry Weir on bass clarinet and saxophone solo, and the harpist Amanda Whiting, member of Matthew Halsall’s Gondwana Orchestra, with her own eagerly awaited album imminent on Jazzman Records, to sprinkle ample amounts of their own magic to proceedings. 

Jackson Lapes, member of both Dundundun and Worm Discs, tells us “we’d been following Rebecca for ages but then finally met at We Out Here 2019 and struck up a really good friendship. We’ve been up to Glasgow a few times to hang out and she was the obvious choice for us to invite to record this remix. There’s a proper Bristol-Glasgow connection going on right now so it feels like a real family thing!”.

For Rebecca the love was mutual. “After meeting The Worm Disco guys at We Out Here last summer, and becoming friends, musical family is so valued especially in times like these, and the guys are absolutely one of the lights in life that have happened since last year. It made absolute sense to team up on this, with our small city Glasgow-Bristol connection keeping us tight. I look forward to many more collaborations to come, and am super excited for what is to come.”

Bristolian promoters Worm Disco Club have been championing South-Western talent since their inception in 2014. Having collaborated with Glastonbury Festival on their notorious ‘Wormhole’ stage and hosted the likes of The Comet Is Coming, The Heliocentrics and The Mauskovic Dance Band at their regular club night, their name has become synonymous with quality groove laden goodness, percussive madness, jazz, psych and beyond.

In one of the world’s sadly most aging-male dominated scenes, Rebecca Vasment has helped to rejuvenate the jazz world, from Glasgow to London and beyond and introduced countless fans to the freedom principles of jazz, whilst becoming the biggest champion of Glasgow’s homegrown jazz talent. Ethiopian inspired jazz from Israel is the compound of Sandman Project. It’s a heady mix overseen by Tal Sandman, the guitarist and leader of the group based in Jaffa, the Arabic district of Tel Aviv. Consisting of just four band members on guitar, trumpet, bass and drums, they are set to release their debut Royal Family EP on the mighty Batov Records.

‘Savannah Trip’, the 5th and last track on the record, is an invitation to traverse the Malian desert with an insistent sense of purpose that could easily be lost with a larger group or production. It reflects a marriage of psychedelic West African rock and Ethopian jazz carried by swirling trumpets and the adventure of Tal’s guitar. The fretboard is pushed to the limits as the band slink through the door of the cosmos and join Sun Ra in ethereal, improvisational vibration.

Premiere: Sandman Project - Savanna Trip

The Cranes were one of Uganda’s most popular teenage bands in the 1970’s. Founded in 1965, they metamorphosed at the end of the 1970’s into the Afrigo Band which is still, up to today, the number one band in the country. What’s love and Joy, both written by singer and guitarist Tony Senkebejje, appeared in 1974 on the only Cranes’ LP ‘Top Ten Hits’.
When the album hit the record stores in Kampala, bad luck had befallen The Cranes. A month before the recording of the album their bass player Jessy Kasirivu was killed because of President Idi Amin’s amorous association with his girlfriend. Senkebejje, scared for his life, fled to Kenya, only returning to Uganda 15 years later. The song What’s love describes how confusing love can be to a young soul and is partly inspired by Kasirivu’s death. Joy is a love song for Senkebejje’s wife Rachel who followed him to Kenya and who has been singing lead and playing guitar with him in their Simba Sounds Band ever since. Both songs feature prominently in the documentary Bwana Jogoo: the ballad of Jessy Gitta (2019 – 70 min – UG/NL/FR) which investigates the death of Jessy Kasisirvu at the hands of Idi Amin‘s State Research agents. Bwana Jogoo, directed by Dutch filmmaker Michiel van Oosterhout, showcases many great 1970’s songs from Uganda while letting Uganda’s musicians of yesteryears recount fond memories of one of their own, Jessy Kasirivu. These are the folks that worked and socialized with Jessy and knew him better than most. Their accounts of the events that led to Jessy’s disappearance are riveting and haunting. It lays bare a hitherto unexplored subject and one deserving of serious interrogation and scholarship – the naked power of authoritarianism and sexual predation.

In anticipation of Kit Sebastian's forthcoming second album in 2021, the duo have delved into their archives to present a special digital single release. Think of this as not necessarily a taster of what's to come, but more as a starter that refreshes the appetite for the next course.

'Rain (باران)' was the second track recorded in their analogue studio, and because of this, it has a slightly more primitive rudimentary sound. It was written more or less to test the studio and to learn what sounded good and didn't. It was a hot French hazy July day which you can hear translated into the sound of the track. The version on this EP has been re-sung to include Merve’s vocals.

'Questions' was written and recorded for the duo's short film 'C'est Quoi Le Mantra Moderne'. It was intended for a scene that they would later abandon: a summer night, sitting in an old-fashioned café in Le Grand-Pressigny, where they ask each other one question after another without any clear answers. Given the limited amount of film they had, this idea felt risky which meant they couldn't release the track with the film. Yet, it can still be enjoyed on its own and hopefully, still, enrich the experience of their visual essay and bring a new layer to it.

We hope you enjoy this further excursion into the world of Kit Sebastian, and big thanks to the duo for rescuing 'Questions' from the cutting room floor for us all to savour.
