Akalé Wubé are the hardest working band on the Ethio-Jazz scene in France today. For seven years they've been hitting the stage with an impressive regularity, all over Europe, Asia and Africa. Their music — half original songs, the other half covers of Ethiopian classics and traditional tunes from the 60s and the 70s — has been growing, expanding and maturing into a unique Ethiopian groove of their own. Next week they'll be playing at the Pan Piper in Paris, with famous Malian musician, vocalist, arranger and composer Cheick Tidiane Seck as their guest. French Ethio-jazz band Arat Kilo will be opening. It'll be on saturday, october 17th. We've said it before, but save the date!

Grant Phabao is the unstoppable producer behind the Paris DJs sound. Over nearly two decades of superb music-making, he grew to be a prime purveyor of Jamaican Soul, wether labeled "ska", "rocksteady", "reggae", etc. After releasing albums with reggae icons Carlton Livingston, The Lone Ranger, The Jays or The Silvertones, and remixes for the whole planet, from George Clinton to Alice Russell, from David Byrne to Shawn Lee, from Jurassic 5 to The Beta Club… he started producing African music, working with the likes of Ebo Taylor, Franck Biyong, musicians from Fela's Afrika 70 or Egypt 80, from Antibalas, from The Souljazz Orchestra, or from Brownout, just to name a few.
With the Paris DJs label, he managed to cross the rigid boundaries of music categorization with an astonishing quantity of high-quality productions and remixes in many styles, achieving a high-order mastery in reggae, ska and afrofunk…

While discussing the possibility of releasing Akalé Wubé's sax & flute player Etienne de la Sayette's solo recordings on Paris DJs, the idea of getting Grant Phabao to put to good use his reggae-remixing skills on one of Akalé Wubé's songs arose quickly. But what about the Ethiopian horn or vocal harmonies, would they fit on a reggae groove? Well you can't really know until you try, so that's exactly what happened.

The song picked is the delighful 'Alègntayé', extracted from the band's latest album, 'Sost'. It's a tune originally written by Ayaléw Abbèbè and Tesfayé Abbèbè, arranged by Mulatu Astatqé and made famous by Pan-Ethiopian singer Tlahoun Gèssèssè. Akalé Wubé covered it with radiant Ethiopian singer Genet Asefa on vocals. Now Grant Phabao takes the tune all the way to Kingston, Jamaica — via Addis-Abeba, Ethiopia and Paris, France. It's gonna be hard to make a groove more global than that. And guess what? The resulting blend, unheard before, works like a charm! Ethio-reggae. What's next?

Ladies and gentlemen we are proud to present you the long awaited new mini ep from Timewarp inc. A brand new release with two fresh songs under the title 'Dubwarp' is coming out on your digital music world. The release features great collaborations with Timewarp inc’s, favorite and special fellow friends and artists: Al The X-King (Guitar), Georges Perin (Vocals), Gobey (Vocals), RSN (Scratches).

The opening track 'Theory of Revolution’ stands out in the area of dub, reggae, beats and roots and features one of our favorite vocalists, the half French-half Greek Georges Perin, participating with his talented voice, delivering unique soulful-funk vocals. The lyrics were written by his lyric mate Panagiotis Skraparlis. Also featured in the release is a long eight-minute dub version with more music, fewer vocals, dubbed & burned with space echoes to trip out your mind and stack you in the mood.

Second track ‘Liberty is Our Destiny’ brings back the breaks in a dub style with plenty of funk and big bass concept. Here we get the strong vocals and lyrics from another great talent, Gobey, the MC & vocalist from Balkan Riddms and Just Dread. Born in Africa, bred in Greece, this is the man behind the riddim, authentic, real and expressing to the fullest representing one love ideology. Yet another good fellow friend, RSN, appears with his special recorded scratches for the song. An instrumental version is included on the release, as we mind our fans, lovers and collectors, for less vocals music.

Al The X-King is responsible for all the great guitars lines, hooks and melodies on both songs, he is also one of the founders of the well know great Greek band The Burger Project, an extremely talented musician, vocalist and a great guitar player!

Afrolicious Bio -

Afrolicious, the live/electronic collective based in the San Francisco Bay Area started out not as a band but as a club night at the famed Elbo Room in The Mission District in 2007.  The format of Afrolicious party was very open and included the DJs spinning the latest soulful dance music including Afro-House, broken beat, modern funk and disco alongside classics and re-edits and remixes of their favorite Afrobeat, Salsa, and Brazilian funk alongside live percussionists and guest MCs and musicians. Eventually morphing into a live band led by the production and arrangement skills of Pleasuremaker, many dancers, DJs and producers began to take notice of their unique sound.  

Since the release of their first two EPs which were produced by Rob Garza of Thievery Corporation, the reputation of the band and founding DJs Pleasuremaker and Señor Oz have grown and they have performed everywhere from Red Rocks, Burning Man, Cielo and the Greek Theatre in Berkeley. "We never planned on becoming a live band, but like everything else about Afrolicious it happened organically," says Oz. "When we started the party, it was truly what we thought the Mission was about. It wasn't exclusive and it wasn't exclusionary, it was open to everyone. The youngest person in our collective is the rising soul singer Ziek McCarter who started with us at 19. Our oldest member is Baba Duru, who moved to SF in 1970 and toured with Stevie Wonder. Our vocalist is from Trinidad and our drummer is from Brazil. We all congregated in SF over our love of the universal groove. There are rhythms that connect all dance music from the beginning of time to the present day and we believed we could transmit them."  

In 2013 they released their debut full-length album, California Dreaming on their own label, Afrolicious Music. IN 2014 they assembled some of the finest DJs and producers from around the world to remix their debut album. California Dreaming Remixed features remixes from Jamaican dub legend Scientist, Rob Garza from Thievery Corporation, Peruvian electronic live hybrid Novalima, Brazilian nu-disco producer Trotter, Australia’s Omegaman, Miami’s Stereo 77 and the Bay Area’s DJ Smash, J Boogie, Izzy Wise and Antonio Guedes.



  Afrolicious is also loosely affiliated with a worldwide group of DJs, producers, bands, and labels who produce contemporary soulful dance music inspired by sounds of the African diaspora, including Antibalas, Chico Mann, Nickodemus, DJ Smash, Wonderwheel Recordings, Subsuelo, and Cumba Mela.

For 8 years Afrolicious brought out an amazing crowd every week to an experience many compare to church in the sense of a weekly gathering for spiritual purposes.
Afrolicious continues to inspire and push the boundaries of music productions, events, and community. They are set to release a number of new releases in 2015. There are finished projects ready to be released and brand new songs being  added to the fold regularly. Stay tuned for new originals, remixes, and mixtapes. Plus some amazing collaborations in the works
