Feliks Banel's guest on this BONUS EPISODE of CASCADE OF HISTORY is Melissa Slager, who earlier this year published a historical novel called "Contests of Strength," which focuses on the Cascadia Tsunami of January 26, 1700 and its impact on the Makah people living near what's now Cape Flattery and Neah Bay. While researching and writing her book over a period of 14 years, Ms. Slager worked closely with members of the Makah Tribe, and learned the Makah language.

Melissa Slager will be discussing her research at the Everett Public Library in downtown Everett, WA on Saturday, November 8, 2025 at 1:00 p.m. at an event which is free and open to the public. In her presentation, Slager will describe the impact of the devastating 1700 tsunami, and how indigenous survival stories worldwide offer a template for surviving the next "Big One."

A brief insight: Vinyl DJ and resident for Timewarp in Bournemouth. My story is as follows:

Having been exposed to electronic music from the age I had ears, I suppose it was inevitable that I've taken the musical path that I have. Growing up listening to artists such as Human League, Visage, Duran Duran, OMD, Jean Michel Jarre, Mike Oldfield, Vangelis etc when the Trance boom came around in the 1990s I was sold. Whilst my school friends listened to Brit Pop. Indie or Hip Hop, I immersed myself in hundreds of dance compilations from the likes of Ministry of Sound & Nukleuz. Still far to young to venture out clubbing I played every compilation to death.

Once I'd turned 18 I found myself at The Opera House in Bournemouth every Friday for Slinky. The music policy was pretty simple but very spectacular: THE finest Trance and Hard House DJs on the planet! Every DJ you'd ever care to mention that was making a noise within those genres during the early noughties played at Slinky. It was Mauro Picotto though who caught my attention the most. Famed perhaps for his Trance anthems such as Lizard, Iguana & Pulsar, it was his ability to crossover into the Techno field that interested me. His Nukleuz compilation "The Lizard Man" is a prime example of this and that led me to his compilation released a year later titled Metamorphose.

Fast forward 5 years and 2 trips to Ibiza in the summer of 2007 convinced me that the Trance scene had gone stale and it was time to focus on the other constant in my musical life: Techno. Picotto's Metamorphose compilation was littered with tracks linked to Picotto (productions, remixes or signed to the BXR imprint) but the standout tracks were Electric Deluxe - Electric Deluxe, Devilfish - Manalive & Chris Liebing - CLR 07.

After 10+ years dabbling with Techno, I found myself back at the beginning. In April 2019 and before everybody started digging their 1210s out the loft during COVID, I decided to go back to basis and re-ignite my love for all things Trance and vinyl and launch a mix project titled Vinyl Destination. I've been doing that for 5 years and now decided to bring all those mixes into one place here on Soundcloud.

Most recently I’ve become a resident for the rapidly growing vinyl only night Timewarp based in Bournemouth. Prior to that I played at a few local nights here and there and held a residency for 2 years on an online Trance radio station called Trancemixers that then morphed into a website called Electronic Mixes. By all means I'd love to play out at a variety of parties so if upon listening to anything I post you think I can provide a soundtrack to a party then please get in touch :-) I'll just need a set of 1210s to play on!

MARCELO ALEJANDRO RODRÍGUEZ
Born in Buenos Aires, Argentina, 1975. He began to study piano at the age of 7 with Martha Romano and at 13 he studied harmony on his own. In 1991 he entered the Conservatorio Municipal Manuel de Falla, from Buenos Aires (CMMF, Spanish acronym) where he took classes of singing, guitar and perfected his pianistic technique. In 1993 he entered the Composition Workshop at the CMMF where he learned composition and improvisation, Ricardo Capellano being his tutor. He graduated in 1996. . 
In 1995 he started a course of studies at the National University of La Plata, where he studied composition with Maria Cecilia Villanueva, Carlos Mastropietro and Mariano Etkin. In 2000 he graduated as Harmony, Counterpoint and Musical Morphology teacher. In 1999 he took composition lessons with Coriún Aharonian and in 2008 gained the Gandini-Melos scholarship. 
At present he is a member of the research team at the National University of La Plata where he is also a teacher of composition. Besides, he is a teacher of improvisation at the school of Art in Berisso.
He has published in specialised magazines. Moreover, his works "Tres canciones" and "Septeto"  have been recently published. 
His music has been played at different venues. As a composer, he has received prizes and commissions (1st Prize, Composition, "Premio Municipal- Ciudad de Buenos Aires- 2008-2009).
