We have been big fans of @ralphsession over here at Le Visiteur over the last few years. He makes quality house music with a classic NYC flavour. Having road tested many of his productions I can also vouch for the fact that they absolutely smash it on the dancefloor. Not surprising as Ralph is also a very talented DJ.

His latest release see's him line up for Shir Khan's Black Jukebox 35 on the excellent @Exploited label. Featuring four slamming house cuts this might just be Ralph's finest EP to date and that's up against some stiff competition.

Our premier today is That Raw featuring legendary producer DJ Amir who has worked with everyone from Dilla to Madlib, Common and Mandrill.

The Raw is proper house music, a huge thumping bassline chugger with it's energy soaked looped up synth, seriously cool vocal stabs and a*s shakin' percussion. For me it's one of the tightest house cuts of 2023 so far.

German-born, Amsterdam based don Retromigration (AKA Malik Kassim) steps into the big leagues, letting loose his debut album on WOLF Music. ‘Straight Foxin’ contains fourteen expertly executed tracks, ranging from hazy beats and jazz-tinged broken rhythms to club-ready groovers, deep excursions, soulful footwork and even some jungle energy. An LP that has long been in the works (and for good reason), it’s packed with a flavour for every occasion. You just know a long player from this player is going to cover all bases.

Over the past few years, Retromigration has built up a loyal following and gained solid support from tastemakers within the electronic music press and radio landscape. For example, BBC Radio 1, NTS Radio, Worldwide FM, Mixmag, DJ Mag, Phonica, Ransom Note, 5 Magazine, Bolting Bits, SlothBoogie all giving his music their seal of approval. With representation from one of the scene’s most credible DJ agencies, Sounds Familiar, Retromigration has also got a busy international DJing schedule and will be touring to support the album release. With an impressive run of releases via Handy, Healthy Scratch, wewillalwaysbealovesong and WOLF in a relatively short space – Retromigration has established himself as hot property and it’s clear to see why. A distinctive style and energy permeate his tracks with a breadth of influences on offer, from hip hop, to jazz, soul to funk.
 
His debut LP, ‘Straight Foxin’, is a carefully curated and crafted journey showcasing the creative explosions firing off in his brain. Joining the dots between genres, taking elements from here, ideas from there – twisting and turning yet never out of place. Take the opening three tracks, all of which are tied together by a deep fondness for jazz, served up in different styles. ‘Kunta’ kicks off proceedings with a hazy and low-slung blend, ‘Formant’ leaning into the realms of broken beat and DnB and ‘Be Someone’ cruises in with the off-kilter house.

Elsewhere, there’s prime examples of Retromigration’s signature sample-laden house with deeper cuts like ‘Mada’ and ‘Bouncer’, sitting side by side with more soulful explorations such as ‘New Cribs’ and ‘ITWT’. As we delve deeper into the record another course of Retromigration’s expansive taste is served up, with four high-energy hits. The bouncing footwork flavours of ‘Kush Love’ ft. Passion Deez and ethereal excursion ‘What If’ lead into a captivating nod to the heydays of jungle and DnB on ‘Mild Fever’ and ‘Bad Knees’ respectively. Straight Foxin, mad flexin – Retromigration has laid down the law with this LP, a debut album done right.

Wille is a Danish electronic artist, a true househead who describes his style as a ‘futuristic nostalgia,’ an experiment in taking up various styles and genres (disco, italo, acid, jazz, deep house) and imagining their alternative evolutions and cross-pollinations.
 
’Bilancia Nero’ is his latest alternative take on the glitz and analog glamour of 1980’s Italo disco, with an acid twist. 
 
He says: "I'm somewhat obsessed with reimagining the past, and the idea of tracing back the steps of how music evolves with technology, and how it might have evolved differently. Nothing new in combining styles, but the art of it, I think, is making it seem like the marriage between genres is obvious, as if Italian electro was always supposed to have acid synthesizer leads".
 
The b-side ’Bilancia Vero - Dance Mix’ is not so much a remix as it's own track, building a new structure around the percussive elements of the former, swapping out his 80’s penchant for a more polished digital sheen, leading us towards the dance music and piano house anthems of the 90s.

After reviving his 16-bit soul with rampantly joyful and excessively hedonistic escapades in New York, the now newly-named Sonikku (casting off the DJ moniker of old and focussing purely on his namesake) takes refuge in the legendary high altitude temple, rising from the forest through the clouds and to a monumental blue-hued floating structure. Sky Sanctuary. 
Sonikku's warm, lilted audio recordings from time spent there tell a story of two Sonikku's. One, a young producer, all scorched drum carnage with fruit basket plugins that betray a balearic leaning that defied their age (the B-side). Then the second Sonikku. Pure vibes, positive waves and solid life lessons gleaned all the way from the Sky Sanctuary (A-side).
