“As a clubkid I would be out of home from Friday to Monday, exploring parts of Berlin and always with an underlying soundtrack. This would mostly be electronic music but different bpms and different intensities. Coming into Wilmersdorf in West-Berlin After a weekend always felt very special. The shift into a calmer and slower part of the city felt very special. I also always felt that time stood still in West Berlin. I could channel the eighties and also the twentieth century. People still dressed like in the eighties and many stores also had unchanged exterior and signs. Therefore my ears longed for music from the past. I used to listen to Berliner Rundfunk Radio every morning when I went to school which is pure 80s hits. Combining this with my hobby of digging music this playlist kind of represents songs which are very important to me and which represent my different moods outside of clubbing and even have great memories or emotional messages hidden in the songs. The purpose of the project is very much just to share a bit of one’s private music taste, particularly in the case of DJs who dedicate their lives to music but are only recognized for their “club music”. This will allow listeners to expand their music taste and get to know a different side to the DJs they follow, while giving DJs the chance to take a break from the music they rely on professionally in order to share a bit more of what makes up their personal musical taste/background.

I personally find that there’s more to DJs than what they are paid to play, or what they show on their social media accounts. I am curious about what they listen to when they are sad, what genres flooded their environments as they grew up, what influences helped shape their current musical knowledge and taste. Also, in times when AI is basically deciding people’s daily listening habits, I believe it wouldn’t hurt to offer some human curation.
