While Secret Stash has been in the business for several years releasing a number of gems ranging from the soul of America to reggae takes on Miles Davis and acoustic Peruvian folk music, they are now focusing some effort on new music as well. Longtime Secret Stash fans rest easy, though. They are still going to continue to mine the vaults the world over to find long-forgotten but essential music.

One of their first new music releases is coming out this September courtesy of Black Market Brass. The band and label both hail from Minneapolis. Secret Stash, which has a very DIY approach to their label, often hosts record-release assembly parties where the local community is invited to come to their offices and assemble the records and album sleeves in return for pizza and beer. It was through several of these that Eric Foss, VP of Marketing and Sales for Secret Stash, met Mitch Sigurdson, one of the founding members of the band.

Sigurdson assembled some friends and local talent to play a variety of styles, often Ghanian highlife and funk. Per Foss, “I think it took a little while for them to realize that they play Afrobeat as well or better than most of the bands out there doing it today. I watched as they transitioned from playing spot-on covers of Fela and Tony Allen to writing their own material.”

This past April, the band headed to the studio to record some original material. Coincidentally, the band picked up a new baritone sax player, Cole Pulice, who was already working with Sonny Knight & the Lakers and Dérobé Dance Band, bands whose original material also will be seeing releases from the label. In a single afternoon, they cut the two tracks heard on the upcoming 45.

“Snake Oil Man” is heavy Nigerian madness. You can bet that it’s no beginners luck. If this is their first swing at the genre, you can expect some exciting material in the future from Black Market Brass who has enough original material already for a full LP.

We reached out to Pierre Chrétien from Souljazz Orchestra, who knows his way around an Afrobeat tune, to hear his thoughts on the band’s sound. Says Chrétien, “It sounds amazing. Definitely no lack of sweat and stink here!” No disagreements here.

Whilst recognising the music of cumbia, guaracha and the electric sound of chicha, Peru Maravilloso owes as much to soul-jazz, Latin-jazz, rock and psychedelia as it does to the traditional styles of Andean, Peruvian criollo and Latin music that dominated the cultural backdrop of Peru during this era.

Here we go with the first treatments on two songs of Mop Mop 's "Isle Of Magic" album which has been a massive grower after its release in March 2013.

first remix was done by Mr Raoul K who is well known for his productions that mixes original African instruments with Techno and Deep House. His releases spreaded his unique sound over the world with great acclaim from Gilles Peterson, Joe Claussel and many other DJs.
His 12 min epic rework is full of psychedelic elements, hypnotic grooves and african percussions. Gilles Peterson already supported this one on his Worldwide show.

Young prodigy of good music, DJ & producer Simbad has become - while making 3 albums and more than 200 productions & remixes - one of the most demanded beatmakers in today’s electronic scene.
Simbad brings Mop Mop's "Kamakumba" into a killer dancefloor tune full of dub elements and tight beats. The original version of "Kamakumba" has been "Today's Top Tune" on the legendary "KCRW" radio.

French producer and DJ iZem started writing music during a 6 year-long musical adventure through Brazil, Spain, Argentina and Ireland. Now based in Lisbon, his unique hybrid sound joins the dots between cutting-edge beatmaking and post-tropical influences. His remix is a mid tempo funk pearl with refined Jazz and Hip-Hop elements.

Paco Zambrano y su Combo - Meshkalina (1968)

Juaneco is a treasured musical icon in Peru due to their chicha sound, a style of music exclusive to Peru that came to roost out of the popularity of cumbia. Hailing from the Amazon with electric guitars and a musical appreciation of the modern Amazonian sounds of Brazilian Carimbo , Cumbia and Rock n Roll but with a large respect to huayno and the traditional elements of Peruvian culture. ‘La Cumbia Del Pacurro’ was written after a plane crash which killed creative leader Noe Fachin but the track, with it’s huge wah wah guitar and  pounding percussion, still retains all the key elements of a classic Juaneco cut.
