'Case Pyhäjoki – Artistic reflections on nuclear influence' was a trans-disciplinary expedition and production workshop in Pyhäjoki, Northern Finland from 1.-11.8.2013. The sixth nuclear power plant (NPP) of the country is planned to be built in Pyhäjoki.
 
Participants of Case Pyhäjoki were for example artists, researchers and activists. The programme consisted of lectures, meeting local people and expeditions of different kinds to get to know the area, nuclear power as a phenomenon, and what the power plant means to people. It reaches from the local to national and global. What is artist's role in the changes in the area and wider? How can we develop methods of creative work in a complex and contested place of social tragedy and distress? How can we communicate this through to wider networks?

The participants created different types of engagements, prototype events and experiments, reaching from a large 'thank you' sign for those who refuse to sell their land to the nuclear power company, to the design of a 'power sports day'; including a local fairytale, a mural painting with local youth, a special karaoke playlist, a DIY geiger counter building workshop, and more. The more includes new and deepened friendships, collaborations and memories of good times and meetings with local people.

From mid-August to late September, after Case Pyhäjoki, the participants have been writing their reflections and documentations on this website. It has been a fruitful time looking back and also to the future.

As a late gift from this process, we publish this recorded discussion (as raw unedited file) which took place on the morning of 9th August between most of the participants, which reflects on our experience and affect related to our actions.

This audiozine pastes together conversation around organisational labour, friendships and motivation, changing disciplines within Pixelache with the recent years, festival 2019, safer space ambitions, things left behind, and a need to collectively imagine future desires. Featured objects include our internal 'pixel' currency for association work, a 3D printer, a bed-side artwork and safe space guidelines.

Pixelache Helsinki is a Finland-based creative association on emerging creative practices with almost 20 years of activity engaging issues in eco-social transformation. Throughout the last two decades, the association has been running a trans-disciplinary platform for emerging art, design, research, technology, and activism that involves a dynamic local community and an annual festival that has recently experimented with a rotating directorial model.

The rich association’s history and activities in the field of transformational creative practice are the core focus of our process, with the hope of answering: How do we keep going?

We sought to explore the how the association has developed and sustained it's festival organisational practice. 

By engaging with organisational meta-data, the office as a tangible memory device, and the production of two audiozines, we gathered perspectives from active members reflecting upon how the organisation has changed via objects and narratives.

While the festivals explored Do-it-with-others cultural network practices & open curatorial models, de-centralisation, and engaging local urban activism issues in Helsinki, long-term production staff left, many new association members joined. From 2015 onward, each festival took energy, but also made space for new actions, slowly adjusting the profile towards post-media and performative events.

Creatures Audiozine 02 - Community Of Practices

This audiozine pastes together conversation around ET grilling, open camp model, festival activity in 2013-2015, decentralization within the association, changing production teams, burn out, and the semi-serious 'positive hijacking' taking Pixelache forwards. Featured objects in the office include liquid smoke, a fabric scheduling device, a megaphone, and a hacked exercise bike.

Creatures Audiozine 01 - Decentralization Burn-out and Hijack

The legendary thinker and radical historian Robin DG Kelley joins us to discuss the importance of the radical imagination and the history of workers' writing. 
Kelley is author of many books on the history of labour and anti-racist struggles, and about  luminary proletarian creative figures. These include: Freedom Dreams: The Black Radical Imagination, Race Rebels: Culture, Politics, and the Black Working Class, and Africa Speaks, America Answers: Modern Jazz in Revolutionary Times. 
In this conversation, Kelley explains how, in the face of corporate and capitalist power, which has never failed to mobilize racism, working people have consistently turned to the written word as a tool of solidarity and a means to demand a different future. In an age of digital capitalism where corporations like Amazon dominate the market for books, films and other "content," reclaiming the power to create and share works of the imagination are more important than ever.

Amazon VS the Radical Imagination - Robin DG Kelley on the importance of freedom dreams (WSS03)

In his 2020 memoir Black Water, award-winning author David A. Robertson reflects on how his Cree heritage and his family's survival of colonialism has shaped his imagination. In this conversation, he speaks of the joys and challenges of writing speculative fiction for adults and children, informed by Indigenous worldviews and struggles. Approaching fiction as a work of community-building, he speaks to the need for courage to push back against dominant narratives.

Robertson is author of numerous bestselling books for readers of many ages in a wide diversity of imaginative genres. In 2021 he received the Writers’ Union of Canada Freedom to Read Award and was named Globe and Mail Children's Storyteller of the Year. He has won Canada's prestigious Governor General's Literary Award several times.

Igor Polskiy, eco-philosopher and pedagogue, originally from Russian Federation, who has authored a book about ecologist Fedor Lazutin, who is known for philosophy and practical organising in the Russian back-to-land movement, and bee-keeping in particular.
