I explore how our lives might change if we knew how to fully inhabit where we are, remembered how sleep helps us grow roots, and could be more stable in the face of these wild times.

134. We Need Grandmother Roots

The conversation revolves around the concept of sustainable, nature-driven farming practices. Teresa Lubano reflects on her father's farm in Kitale, emphasizing a less intensive, more natural approach to farming. Described is a rotational grazing system for cattle, allowing them to graze freely on various paddocks, which results in meat perceived as more organic and flavourful. The farm also includes indigenous trees, which support biodiversity and produce high-quality honey. She argues that this method, which involves minimal human intervention, aligns with natural cycles and is a form of kindness to nature. She concludes by advocating for this approach (nature-driven farming) to be studied and taught as a blend of science and art, suggesting it as a more sustainable and ethical way of farming.
