DEFENSA - PEIXE (BUENOS AIRES, ARGENTINA)

"Five years after the first volume, ARENA01, Agva Records is back with ARENA02, a mega-pack of almost forty tracks focusing on the experimental and hybrid club scene of Latin America.

Released in 2016, the first chapter laid the foundations of the label and unveiled a solid tracklisting composed of close and local members of the collective (Defensa, EL PLVYBXY, CHLO…) and international producers (King Doudou, Bigote).

For this second edition, the label did not go easy and gathered a real festival line-up. ARENA02 features projects from all over the continent and beyond, from emerging artists to real headliners: Dengue Dengue Dengue, Lao (NAAFI, Mexico), Bungalovv (TRRUENO, Argentina), Endgame (Precious Metal, UK), Catnapp, Doxxed, Pobvio, or even the Mexican producer who signed the revival of pre-Hispanic tribal, Ozomatecuhtli. Among others!"

"Act surprised if you want to, but there’s no denying some of the hardest-hitting, most innovative club music right now is being made in South America. And while it’s been at least five years since reguetón beats became a staple of stateside producers, artists in Spain, Colombia, Puerto Rico, and Brazil manage to stay one step ahead by twisting their sounds to further incorporate recent pop detritus and increasingly complex experimental aspirations. Defensa, a Buenos Aires crew with one feet in electronic exploration and the other in what could still be called art-pop in 2017, is one of the finest examples of this.

The Argentine three-piece released an EP of ominous ambient pop last year, and are set to launch their full-length debut in the upcoming months. In the meantime, Defensa have shared with us an exclusive new track, “What U Know,” which they describe as a mixture of gritty early-2000s hip hop and Mad Max’s soundtrack. Mäss Vol. 1 is a selection of tracks by ten contemporary producers of electronic music who live across the world, from Argentina to Russia. A shared feature of their music is symbolic deconstruction and ornamentation of the club scene. The compilation is being released by Slovak label Mäss and mastering has been done by M.E.S.H. (Janus, PAN).

Mäss is a label and also a club night in Bratislava run by two producers - Adam Matej (Ink Midget) and Jonatán Pastirčák (Isama Zing). They perceive electronic music as an important communication instrument, which doesn't intersect only through the geographically well-known club epicenters, but also through the rest of the world. Collaboration on the compilation was based on the connections made through social networks (Soundcloud, Instagram).

"It's not a matter of defining ourselves against the sound of Berlin or London, we are not a movement. We just want to share interesting underrated music that doesn't have enough exposure, because it's not coming from cultural centers."

Territorial (EP) came from a urgent need to showcase unfiltered talent coming from me and my black peers connected the continent.The primary purpose is to generate raw, unrestricted energy. The clubs are still on hiatus but not our drive to bend, push, cross and distorted genres and sub-genres of music that share same genetic material. 

At the end of day, we all are "omalã vo feka" (which means sons of this land, Africa in Umbundu).
