Sound Works - Lin Weidong

Originally a Korean poem by award-winning poet Kim Kyung-Ju, the feature is a sonic exploration inspired by and intermingled with the mysterious and imaginative text, read in both English and Korean. Metaphors of nature in nature are reinvented against the backdrop of the city — the river as an escalator, the sounds of the helicopter's propellers as a stirring 'blurred wind'. 

This feature explores 'language' — the conveying of meaning and expression of ideas. Can they be fully retold in another tongue? What is our common language?

Two men come to terms with loss —  in an open, honest confrontation of memory and grief.

A programme about death as a part of living, about pain in remembering but also in forgetting. We are but passing clouds — in the vastness of the experiences we call life. 

From The Mourning Diary by Roland Barthes: 

“There is a time when death is an event, an adventure, and as such mobilizes, interests, activates, tetanizes. And then one day it is no longer an event, it is another duration, compressed, insignificant, not narrated, grim, without recourse: true mourning not susceptible to any narrative dialectic.” 

“How strange: her voice which I knew so well, and which is said to be the very texture of memory ('the dear inflection...'). I no longer hear. Like a localized deafness..”

A tour into the home of an interior designer reveals more than just the decoration of a domestic space.  

David had bought a converted barn with his partner Neil where they spent most of their time cultivating a garden in the idyllic countryside.

The feature draws heavily from the metaphor of its setting and anticipation of seasons.From Stray Birds by Rabindranath Tagore: 

“The birth and death of the leaves are the rapid whirls of the eddy whose wider circles move slowly among stars.”  

“The fish in the water is silent, the animal on the earth is noisy, the bird in the air is singing, But Man has in him the silence of the sea, the noise of the earth and the music of the air.”
