دائماً - حين أمشي - أرى السُّتْرةَ القُرمزيَّةَ
بينَ الزحام.
وأرى شعرَكِ المتهدِّلَ فوقَ الكتِف.
وأرى وجهَك المتبدِّلَ..
فوق مرايا الحوانيتِ,
في الصُّور الجانبيَّةِ،
في لفتاتِ البناتِ الوحيداتِ,
في لمعانِ خدودِ المُحبين عندَ حُلول الظلامْ.
دائماً أتحسَّسُ ملمَسَ كفِّك.. في كلِّ كفّ.
المقاهي التي وهبَتْنَا الشَّرابَ,
الزوايا التي لا يرانا بها الناس,
تلكَ الليالي التي كانَ شعرُكِ يبتلُّ فيها..
فتختبيئينَ بصدري من المطرِ العَصَبي,
الهدايا التي نتشاجرُ من أجلِها,
حلقاتُ الدخانِ التي تتجَمَّعُ في لحظاتِ الخِصام
دائماً أنتِ في المُنتصف!
أنتِ بيني وبين كِتابي,
وبيني وبينَ فراشي,
وبيني وبينَ هدُوئي,
وبيني وبينَ الكَلامْ.
ذكرياتُكِ سِّجني, وصوتكِ يجلِدني
ودمي: قطرةٌ - بين عينيكِ - ليستْ تجِفْ!

About Zaii Zaman
 
The name of this project was chosen to reflect a longing for time long gone when life was simpler and more beautiful. For Ahmed Hassan, the project’s founder and musical composer, his love for traditional music and his persistence on returning to that golden era is not in trying to recreate or reinvent on the past, but rather on returning to deeper connections with music. In essence, for all the musicians in the project, this connection is within the scales and notes of the music. It used to be in Egypt that going to live shows was as much about going to hear a band as it was about listening to musical set. Today, however, the concept of ‘listening to music’ is tied directly with vocal-based bands, rather than allowing space for music that spotlights the fusion of different instruments. Zaii Zaman was created to overcome these changes by focusing on the return to just the music.
 
Zaii Zaman is also about identity, specifically the Egyptian identity, and that need for music should reflect this. The music reveals this in its oriental sound and it’s lack of dependence on grand solos. The music is about the journey, on which the audience travels with us to reach their own storyline through the music.
 
Zaii Zaman has large goals and even bigger dreams. Our main aim is to have the audience connect again with music and feel comfortable with the idea of listening. In the long run, this will shift the idea of music beyond the focus on the names to a focus on the notes. We all want this music to reach a wider and more diverse audience.
 
Each of the musicians is a legend in the Arab world and known to be a pioneer of their instruments. In this project, musicians are invested in this project not only for the concept, but as well for the complexity of the musical standards. At the core of it, all agree that Zaii Zaman is they find themselves creatively.
