The Donner Party was a group of American pioneers who set out for California in a wagon train in May 1946. The journey usually took four to six months, but the Donner Party was slowed by following a new route called Hastings Cutoff. By November 1846 the emigrants had reached the Sierra Nevada, where they became trapped, high in the mountains, by an early, heavy snowfall.  Some of the immigrants resorted to cannibalism to survive. Rescuers from California arrived in February 1847. Of the 87 members of the party, 48 survived to reach California.

Historians have described the episode as one of the most spectacular tragedies in Californian history. 

After almost five years of construction effort, the Central Pacific Railroad successfully completed its 1,659-foot Tunnel at Donner Pass. In 1869, after a long, bitter and often terrifying struggle against Indian attacks, brutal weather, floods, labor shortages, political chicanery, lawlessness and a war, the first transcontinental railroad finally became a reality.
