DC Promo Tracks #846: Kid Simius "300 Million Stars"

Andy Compton is undisputedly one of the hardest working producers in dance music. With over 40 albums and 150 EPs released either solo or as part of deep house legends The Rurals, the Bristol-based producer just can’t stop creating profoundly funky and vibey music that works on loose limbed dancefloors, beach bars and shag carpets alike. He has appeared regularly on quality labels as diverse as Lumberjacks In Hell, Hed Kandi, LARGE and naturally, his own vital imprint Peng.

Andy’s latest long player for Tangential Music is a collaboration with LA artists Irantzu Pujadas and Brad Kent under the name Blue Dream. Aptly titled ‘‘A Trip To LA’ the album is a deliciously louche and laidback twelve tracker of pure LA heat. The project began as many great ones do, without a plan. Visiting Brad’s studio to check out his huge vintage analogue synth collection in search of new sounds for The Rurals, they got to thinking...and jamming. With Brad on the dusty old drum machines, Irantzu on the microphone and Andy in his synthesiser heaven, Blue Dream was born. Their first and equally good album ‘California Dreaming’ was released on Peng in early 2019 and now we are here with a second round of perfectly realised dream-like grooves. Think of the sun-facing vibes of Shuggie Otis, Eddie Chacon, Bobby Caldwell or Roy Ayers at his most relaxed and add a passionate knowledge and experienced grasp of electronic forms. They make this seem easy goddammit.

‘I Wanted To See You’ sounds like Khruangbin with a 303, ‘You Want Me Back’ with it’s midtempo shuffling groove, saucy squidge bass line and seductive soul house vocal is pure daytime at Houghton Festival happiness, like Crazy P in the hot tub. At no point are we required to sweat. Lie down if you must, stand up and sway if you’re ready. This could be lovers music or just for you alone. Irantzu’s vocals throughout are whispers and purrs, evocations of humid love drenched in reverb and easy living. Sunset music.

The singles ‘I Wanna Go Home’ and ‘Sandwich Dub’ don’t deviate far from the endless feeling of hazy cinematic sunshine, one a sultry plea for intimacy, the other a heavily dubbed out slice of musique française amour. ‘Trip To LA’ with a vocal more than suggestive of the Balearic classic ‘Sueno Latino’, spare guitar chords and a prodding repetitive bass line creates a feeling of slinky bliss. Every track is full of sensual melodies and the space required to be truly funky. Press play and invite a bit of California magic in.

Founded back in 1996 by Felix Dickinson & Tony Lee Ugly Music has always captured House- and Techno music's momemtum still remaining true to the origin of the music by providing their followers as well as music enthusiasts with classy releases that have a classic note. And Ugly Music has managed to remain true to their style, even after 25 years of putting out music and dedicating themselves to what the label is passionate about – maybe that's the label's formula of success, maybe it's just knowledge, experience and the love for music. However, Ugly Music rings in the third season of 2021 with a stellar four tracker from UK's finest Sir Lord Comixx that goes by the name of Play Loud, Be Proud. The EP definitely does exactly what it says on tin and when following the instructions from its title. The A2, After The Sun Fades, seemingly is a dedication to the blue hour of the day and all its beauty. A tapping bass line is shortly after it's first beat provided wih an irresistable synth-line and pushing hi-hats that makes the listener loses him-/herself in those chords. And even if Sir Lord Comixx only uses little effects and the track itself is basically built around the synth-line, After The Sun Fades is close to perfection or maybe it is, because it is not an overloaded track and just focuses on what's important.

Lukas Ivancin aka Beatfoot is a music producer based in Prague, Czech Republic
Beatfoot writes modern and colourful electronic music. His work is full of emotions and dreamy passages, reflecting electronic as well as wildlife sounds in Nu-Disco, Balearic, Downtempo and Deep house styles. He often likes to cooperates with musicians and vocalists and add more live vibe to his production.

Green Haze EP is typical blissful Beatfoot’s  production. Three very organic deep house/balearic/downtempo gems full of live instrumentation of Rhodes piano, airy sax, funky guitar and soulful vocal. And there is also decent and more club oriented remix of Green made by Vivacity Music co-owner Cubik.

Those tasty Glasgow types Manakinz (Sub Club legend Harri and Max Raskin) are back with their third EP for Monologues, filled with another three beguiling, heavyweight, innovative belters.'Electric Bob' kicks off with the dreamiest of chords and heady vocal delays floating over a chugging groove, before 'Lovely Lugz' takes things in a moodier direction with Hamish Hay's infectious afrobeat-flavoured guitar licks, tribal percussive rhythms and a stomping bass groove. 'Nifty McPherson' rounds the EP off in tripped-out style, with hypnotic FX and bugged-out synths bringing a psychedelic edge to this varied EP.

PREMIERE : Manakinz feat. Hamish Hay - Lovely Lugz

Citizens Of Vice racks up release number Thirty Two and for this EP we have the oh so excellent ‘Bonnie & Klein’. The greek duo will be familiar to fans of the label following a multitude of releases on like minded labels inc Music For Dreams, Leng and Nu Northern Soul.

‘Bourbon Street' is the release in question and features two new tracks ‘Bourbon Street' and 'Lobby Love'. Both tracks are beautifully constructed balearic delights. If you close your eyes and are of a certain age these could sonically transport you back to the late 80’s on a certain island.

On the remix front we have two of our favourite producers adding their own ideas to the OG’s. Coyote and Rayko who have both released and remixed on COV are back with their remix caps on and shake up the originals with their uniques flavours.

One of the underground's most exciting talents to emerge in recent years is the Oslo-based production maestro Third Attempt.  With fans like Ron Trent, Art of Tones, and Bill Brewster, he’s been dextrously merging musical aesthetics that fuse trip-hop, funk, soul, and disco. Dazzling the scene with his far-reaching music since arriving at the Beatservice fold with 'Shoreline' back in 2018, since then his ever-evolving repertoire has continued to serve up immaculate sonic surprises. The 23-year-old wasting no time making his indelible mark on the scene with his impeccable ear for constructing compelling leftfield grooves, his album 'The Novel Sound' drops in May.
Opening with the rolling 'Freak Out', where dusty strings make way for vocal samples, scratches, and searing sirens over a bass-heavy groove. The mid-tempo chug of 'Age Of Steam' evolves over a crisp, club-ready rhythm, where heavy funk guitars, dancing keys and vocal stabs cascade. 'My Girl' features an irresistible disco beat, rhythm guitars and dreamy piano chords that set the scene for rousing horns to blast off into blissful summer skies. 'Nu Funk'  drops hip hop samples, tight beats, and a delectable bass, while ‘Sunbeam Symphony’s’ keyboard solo dazzles before subsiding to a dub-infused break. 'Definite' effortlessly floats through waves of thick bass, funk guitar, elegantly used samples, and laser-tight drums. 
The trip-hop 'Nightfall' enraptures as rich chords beckon, congas cascade, mysterious melodies roll, and an exotic refrain builds before the glorious lead vocal appears. 'Working Man' drifts in to fill the space with smokey drums, weighted bass, and an enigmatic whistle, like the pages of an evocative film noir. 'Greed' hides subliminal messages casting a knowing eye over the consumer-driven world we live in and self-help culture that pervades our society. Lastly, 'Last Winter Of My Childhood' transports the listener into a hallucinatory realm, with drowsy bass notes, tripped out pads and emotive strings building to a profound and rush-inducing crescendo.
