“At this point, the narrative of an album either real or totally constructed, often becomes the defining lens through which people hear the music — unfortunately or fortunately. In a perfect world, we’d be releasing music and saying nothing about it and allowing it to be what it is… You’d like to think it would be obvious what it is and how it should feel.”

“Making music that is non lyrical, there’s a fleeting opportunity in the way things are titled to add weight in a certain direction. That’s always been an element of songwriting for me, that’s most appealed to me, is the way that titles feel. Some of my favourite music often has great titles! I’ve always enjoyed that process of weaving those threads together…”

“It’s a slippery slope writing music for film! It’s weirdly seductive, in that being given a reason to write something, having a linear narrative in front of you that’s saying this is what I need… And when it works… I mean, some of my favourite moments in music are film score! But it has a detrimental effect on making music for music’s sake.”

Box5ive is a DJ, live performer and sound designer based in London, UK. He has released tracks on labels we're very much fan of like Well Street Records and Comic Sans Records and his debut LP will be released in June 2024 (on co:clear), alongside two other EP's and appearances. INDEx Mix #44 - Box5ive

This month’s episode welcomes Reykjavik based Australian producer, composer, and sound artist @BenFrost. Early albums like Theory of Machines, By The Throat, and Solaris established Ben Frost as a frontrunner in conceptual, boundary-pushing, and sometimes aggressive electronic music — echoed in his earth shaking live performances, which themselves are celebrations of spine tingling bass frequencies and volume. 

Not for the faint of heart, his music is inspired by punk rock guitar, minimalism, and in the case of his most recent album, heavy metal, often eschewing storytelling altogether in favour of a visceral, physical musical experience. And yet, his work in film and TV scoring, dance, and even opera suggests he’s still interested in narrative artwork. 


In this conversation, Ben and I explore the different facets of storytelling, or lack thereof, as a musician, his new album Scope Neglect, and his approach to composition across these decidedly different fields.

bleu noir. First and foremost, a friendship composed of Edouard-Marc and Bastien. Two companions who, in their distinct singularities, come together to converge towards a common universe. Complementarity is created from the beginning of the project to the finishing touches of their musical collaborations. A sincere, imaginative, and heartfelt approach. Random but shared experiences, such as numerous musical events ranging from concerts to festivals, inspire them. All of this leads to beautiful creations like this EP named: Naviguer à vue.

“Naviguer à vue” is the story in a fictitious and picturesque imagination, of a collective adventure taking place on a boat. The construction and launching of it, welcoming "Hordes" of people, are represented by "Recherche hivernale". A long aquatic journey through "Brume épaisse", filled with “Emergences of details”, as beautiful as they are stressful. Presented to the people on the boat is an internal and collective struggle, "Psychomachia". A battle between vice and virtue, between the humble human and the one of a self-centered and selfish society. “Inno”, floating on the surface and swimming, between two worlds, unable to leave the fluid and yet aware that it exists. A track that could have been called “Innolude”. The sound translations of these different emotions and sensitivities, vectorized by “Diversions currents then landscapes”, make this EP a true journey.

Today's premiere is the second track from this great release, "Brume épaisse." This eerie, aquatic techno odyssey is defined by a powerful bassline that builds tension like The Marin, bringing thick coastal fog over a southern seaside city.

"Brume épaisse" boasts a delicate yet murky atmosphere, perfectly grasping the essence of a late-night after-hours track.

“Naviguer à vue” EP is set for release in the second half of April.
