Sonic could be left powerless facing a Super-Scourge. Shadow later found out about this future and followed the hedgehogs through a ripple in time using the Phantom Ruby. Knowing this, Shadow embarked on a single mission in the future; To kill Scourge and take the Chaos Emeralds before Scourge or Sonic can obtain them. This however, also conflicted with Sonic's plans.
