RagaLabs : Versatile and aesthetically pleasing, Raag Yaman is boundless in creative pursuit. The attempt in this piece has been to creatively showcase, in a short time-span, the various components of a Hindustani music presentation. It starts off with a soothing alaap that draws one into the depth of the raag while touching upon all the notes that define it. The actual bandish is then presented - a basic version first, followed by experimentation with several variations in the mukhda and antara. Aakar and swar taans are generously interspersed as ornamental interludes. The piece ends with each singer signing off in their own unique way and harmoniously concluding on the homecoming note of ‘Sa’ !

Here is Naiharva recorded in 2007 in a concert at the Alliance Francaise Chennai. It was Vedanth's Maati Kahe collection and he had invited different artists to collaborate in different songs. This was what I had sung.

From Thar desert region comes unique caste of musicians, Langas, whose main profession was to sing and dance for their patrons. Bachu Khan’s father performed yet for the Royal family of Jodhpur – Rathore Gharana. With the end of royalty state function of Langas, their music started to flourish during all occasions including weddings, births, engagements and festivals. According to the Darbari (royal) tradition of several centuries Langas still sing love songs in their mother tongue, Marwari, depicting one’s longing for the lover, joy of reunion and hopes that lovers put in the future.

Vaari jaun re, the totally peppy Rajasthani/Kutchi/Malvi guru vandana folk song caught Vedanth and my attention first in The Rajasthan Kabir Yatra when Mooralamarwada made it our anthem.But when the real love happened was when we heard Mahesha Ram sing. With a lilt which spread in front me the entire desert, camels walking, caravans moving, the works. And everytime I hear or sing the powerful, humbling, joyous and beautiful imagery of my guru standing at my doorstep/courtyard gives me goosebumps. Here is a recording of singing in the great eastern mill, mumbai. Still working on the pronunciation.
