CD Reviews – May 2011 – Keri Jioras: White Swan

Where has Keri Jioras been hiding? Her debut album, White Swan, is full of slow, sad, acoustic-Americana and soul balladry. It is a country-folk gem released in 2010 that deserves some serious attention.

Jioras has a universal sound that is an amalgamation of Ryan Adams, Cat Power, Sera Cahoone and local favorite Kristin Allen Zito. The lead off track on White Swan sets the stage for the rest of the recording: a full band accented by banjo and pedal steel, held together by acoustic guitar… all the accouterments for a new folk classic. Track two is titled “Sweet Misery,” which pretty much sums up the feelings evoked with this record. But there is redemption.

White Swan is accessible and appealing to a wide range of audiences, both musically and topically. On “More Than This,” Jorias proclaims, “I’m scared and I’m bored and I’m restless.” Her songs deal with anything from the pains and joys of love, wanting more out of life, and celebrating the inherent beauty that surrounds us all. This is not groundbreaking work, but it is written and delivered flawlessly.

Jioras’ voice is full, but simple. There are no flourishes; just smooth harmonies and consistently pitch perfect mid-range vocals. Tracks like “All I Want” are a testament to the tasteful recording and mixing of Jioras’ audio engineer Michael Iris, with simple acoustic guitar and strong cello and slide guitar. The cello and guitar act merely as accents in all the right places, instead of overpowering the vocals and acoustic guitar.

There is hopefulness to Jorias’ songs. They are slow, down tempo, and heart wrenchingly beautiful. The album ends with title track “White Swan,” which proclaims, “Life is so beautiful.” With a soundtrack like Keri Jioras, life is indeed so beautiful.
