It's already been a decade since J Dilla — the mercurial producer and rapper from Detroit — passed away and his posthumously completed album, The Shining, saw the light of day on BBE Records. 

As they prepare to release the project on 7" for the first time, we're extremely honoured to get our hands on a never-before-heard mixtape by the master himself. Made some time between mid-1999 and early 2000, it's a fly-on-the-wall showing of what Jay Dee had blaring out of his speakers while on the sofa or by the MPC.

my entry for the battle I hope you enjoy in the first half I made a trap beat by switching the brass death on multiple pads and adjusting the tune . I didn't enjoy the way the square murdered sounded so I chopped it to get that stab in the beginning and I stacked and layered all the other sounds through out the beat. and i just added two of my own synths and some 808's. the second part came to me when I was trying to figure out how to use the SFX 12 so the second part all the main components stayed the same with the exception of me creating a new melody for the brass death and using fewer stabs of the square murder chops. I made some new drums played a little piano over top with a baseline and @ 2:22 that is all the battle sounds playing with a little backing piano. :)

I created this track using the  Akai MPC Ren, Korg Triton and Logic.. I threw some reverb, stereo delay and auto pan on a few of the samples provided while adding and playing my own sounds along side them.  I put the jazz guitar in reverse and lowered the volume for added flavor and also adding the decimator effect to change its sound a little. I used UFE Doggyland to enhance the bass line throughout the song  and also made it so that it would stand out a bit more during the chorus.  The talk box is chopped throughout the track (sharply).  The strings are chopped to add it's on resonance throughout the track and last but not least the electric filter comes in towards the end for the outro of the track to fade it out.
