Piano Étude No. 1

I have decided to publish my first study (étude) for the piano. The sheet music is available via the link above. 

This étude was designed to exercise the performers ability and dexterity with arpeggios, specifically in triplets, and was written in a style not dissimilar to the romantic era. It is difficult to play triplets against a melody which is in simple time, and I wanted to exercise this area of piano playing. The piece is supposed to be played moderately quickly however room for rubato is allowed, especially during the more melodic B section. The player also has to control the gravity of their hands, as the melody is denoted by emphasis on the highest note being payed within a short phrase. 

The pianist similarly will have their geography of the keyboard put to the test, as well as having both hands adept at playing scalic figures. Keeping the accompaniment from the melody is crucial, as if the support is too heavy the clash of notes will become amiss, and sound unpleasant. Moreover, the piece exploits both major and minor keys, specifically the enharmonic, as both sections of this piece are in E minor, and E major. 

I will write short summaries on some of the pieces that inspired me and what areas I focused on with them and I will link the pieces respectively so you can listen to them.
I was inspired by three pieces when I was composing this.

Étude Op. 25 No. 5 “Wrong Note” (1837) by Frederic Chopin. The difficult areas in this piece are the large rolls in the left hand, coupled with the minor second intervals abound. This piece similarly progresses from E minor to E major, as well as the arpeggios in my B section are heavily influenced by Chopin’s. The sounds that Chopin establishes was something I wanted to try for myself.

Étude No. 3 S.141 “La Campanella” [From the Paganini Études] (1838) by Franz Liszt. This Étude is played at a brisk allegretto tempo and studies the right hand jumping between intervals larger than one octave. 16th notes are played between the two notes and the same note is played two octaves or two octaves and a second higher. The largest leap I have in my piece is a 13th, however I wanted to exercise large leaping in my study too.

Étude Op. 25 No. 11 “Winter Wind” (1836) by Frederic Chopin. It begins with the solo piano introduction of the melody. The first theme follows, consisting of tumultuous cascades of semiquaver duplets. A leaping forger of the left hand in the relative major, which shortly segues into a repletion of the first theme. 
Both hands play an important role in this piece; the melody is sung through the heavy left hand and the right hand contributes the études name sake with rapid scales and arpeggios. This study must be hands as separate melodies that work together, in a duet for on performer. The notion of two ‘people’ playing as one performer was one that resonated very fervently with me, and I decided to apply that technique for this piece.

That is quite enough from me. The piano is something I’ve been playing since the age of 4 - and even though I do some rather careless improvisation now and again, it feels extremely refreshing to put my musical knowledge and my piano skills to the test. If only time would freeze. If only this one moment would continue on forever. In the instance where the broken clock is always right. What seemed motionless for eternity, was the split second of infinity that continued to resonate in my eyes and heart.  

As my mind melted away like snow being revealed to the sun, we continued our masquerade around the truth, but we kept it masked indefinitely. 

What you want to see, and what you don’t want to see. What you want to hear, and what you don’t want to hear. This is the feeling that kept the cascading promise of a lie falling and falling until it was too late. 

You were gone and I was alone.

I am writing this piece from an elegiac frame of mind. To a time which we remember. To a time to which we won’t be able to return.

A time where the world wasn’t a scary and daunting. A time where we remained seemingly untinctured by what the future holds. A time where time itself seemed perennial, where the world would keep turning regardless of any thought.

A time where there wasn’t a construct for you to fit in. A time where seeking, desperately trying to obtain validation from others was irrelevant. A time where we didn’t need to feed the ego with how we compare to other people, what popularity we attain or how much money we earn.

Although our innocence may be gone, the path that one might go on to try and achieve happiness may not be necessary. Maybe we have an illusion of what happiness is, and that we were most content, most happy, and most perfect right from the beginning.
