What Influences my Sound

On a Saturday morning at the start of November 2013, First Word Records took 3 of our favourite producers out of London to spend the day browsing through the vinyl shelves of the biggest record nerd we know - the incomparable Mr Thing. This was the culmination of an idea that first manifested itself on Record Store Day 2012. Like most ideas it was a natural conclusion to a conversation about records and music - kidkanevil had expressed a desire to dig through Mr Thing's sizeable collection for some inspiration. Chatting to Mr Thing it seemed unfair to limit this to only one producer - Tall Black Guy and Eric Lau were top of our wish list. So - a double 7" (Mr Thing would make a beat too - they are his records after all) in time for Record Store Day 2013 (yes, we're a year late). There was however one stipulation about the records from the usually mild-mannered Mr Thing:
'The guys can sample anything they like, but Nothing Leaves The House....'
And who were we to argue.....
The result is four tracks that celebrate our love for record digging, sample chopping and the simple love of a dope beat.

An initiative by @darkerthanwax (Singapore) and Cascade Records (France), 
independent labels from different continents have come together to present a 
very special and heartfelt project, known as 'Feelings in Colour".

This LP marks a milestone, besides being an exclusive collaboration between 
the labels - it also features a conglomerate of many different artistes from 
all over the world. Resonating with the covert ideology and movement within 
the creative independent sphere in the two Metropolitan cities of Singapore 
and Paris - both spearheaded by dedicated locals who push to develop the 
alternative, forward thinking culture within their respective cities, while 
inadvertently appealing and reaching out to international talents and fans.

With stalwarts from the likes of @amin-payne (Australia), @ohbliv (US), 
@ill-sgimoto (Japan), @samueltruth (New Zealand), @milomills (Austria), 
@trian-kayhatu (Holland), @monkadelic (France).. and founders of DTW, 
@cosanostra (Singapore) - this release speaks great volumes that yield an 
amazing experience.

While genres are disparate - future beats, deep house, bass etc.. - the 
creative concept isn’t. From the minor details of thoughts put into it, to 
the artistes' passion and competence, every single contribution is accounted 
for into making this a really special affair.

"Feelings in Colour" is the thread that weaves the music into the movement- 
cut from the same cloth. We truly hope you enjoy listening, as much as we 
did putting this together.

ILLSUGI - BUBA | 'FEELINGS IN COLOUR' 2 x LP | OUT !

The vibraphone, a.k.a. the "vibes" is without a doubt one of my favorite instruments. Not only for its obscurity, but the "vibes" sound is warm, beautiful, and slightly dark at the same time.  It was used in a lot of jazz recordings decades ago, sampled in the 90's by hiphop artists (i.e. Tribe,  Big L, Common) but is rarely used in modern music today.  When I first heard the original "Bitch don't kill my vibe" track, I thought the Tiden Flyver sample was done very well but thought it would be cool if Kendrick actually used "vibes" in the production.   So here it is, a music nerds play on words come to life.  Enjoy.

Linafornia's "YUNG" is out January 22 via Dome Of Doom.

The act of repurposing defines the creative vision of Los Angeles' Linafornia, flipping samples from various decades of music culture into unique moments of expression. Linafornia is scheduled to drop her Dome of Doom debut LP YUNG on January 22nd, creating a bridge to the foundations of gritty and soulful LA based beat music. Her career expands by the year and with a tenacious passion for lively performances, it's with great honor she's taken first place in the last two Beat Cinema Beat Battles. The last of which was judged by Rolling Stone, Forbes and LA Weekly writer Jeff Weiss, Brainfeeder's Daedelus and Alpha Pup Records' Astronautica. Her foundations and current path is planted firmly in Los Angeles' Leimert Park, born and raised off an eclectic range of influences and inspiration found within the region's thriving community.  

Constructing YUNG primarily with an SP 404 and SP 555, the record is full of infectious grooves, neck-snapping drum lines and collage style layering. Everything you hear is an arrangement of real time techniques. A balancing of sound with rhythmic soul, powerful vibratro and celestial texture. Her live shows have the same powerful energy affect as her debut and she is one of the few producers in California that deviates from utilizing laptops during performance. The sample choices on YUNG merge between her love for '60s / '70s music and growing up on the diversity of hip hop coast to coast. From The Meters and Roy Ayers to Busta Rhymes and Jayo Felony, YUNG is a true repurposing of African-American music culture, melted down and remolded to define the vision of an entirely new generation.

It is with Linafornia's approach to hip hop instrumentals that she has slowly become more aligned with one of her biggest influences: Madlib. Raw, gritty and soulful beats that pay homage to Los Angeles and the foundational producers from the region. Visionaries such as Dibiase, Ras G, Flying Lotus and Samiyam also come to mind when thinking of Linafornia's place in modern music. YUNG has an abundance of flavor, mastered to the rawest fidelity levels you can imagine from Dome of Doom label owner Wylie Cable. Stand out piece "Wetttt" is an organic ride into the inner workings of J Dilla, while "Xtrctions" flips Erykah Badu's "The Cell" unlike any other producer has before. Brazilian loops to Fela Kuti flips to Lauryn Hill quotes, the music travels the globe and comes back full circle to her base in Leimert Park.

YUNG releases on the 22nd of this month with Dome of Doom on both cassette and digital formats. A limited run of 200 cassette tapes of YUNG will be offered online and at her live shows. YUNG will be complemented by a string of performances in the Southern, CA region during the week of release.
